So if a car salesman told you can't test drive a vehicle because you'd be wasting their time!?
What would be your reaction? I was hurt. I was told I was wasting their time. I wanted to know what it would be like to drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I wanted to dream big!!! I wanted to think maybe someday I might make it. I might become a great writer some day and be able to afford it after all the rags to riches stories I've read... So long story short, I wanted to test drive this incredibly beautiful SUV only to be told I'm wasting their time. I got to drive the Compass instead and it was nice, but I had my eye on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I'd simply go to a different dealership. You could also come back on a different day and talk with a different salesman. Not everyone is going to say no. People who give up easily rarely accomplish their dreams.

Best of luck!
Yeah, I'd walk away from that dealer and go somewhere else.
The world has many strange people. We must learn to navigate "around" them, or bypass them to get to where we want to go. Like sales, everything is a numbers game. Some people will say yes, and others will say no. We can't take it personal. The master salespeople have a technique. They never just have one option. They have a list of alternatives. If the first person on the list says "no", they say to themselves "next"! Then move to the next person on the list. Why, because the person who said, "no" is "not" the right person for the deal. It was God's way of saying, "red flag", something is not right with that person. Move on! You will be glad you did a little later!
Why would you still remain at the lot with that insult? Immediately go to a different lot and test drive somewhere else.
I would look him straight in the eyes and tell him he just lost his commission from me for a lifetime. If he doesn't want to take five or ten minutes of his time to let me drive any vehicle I want to test drive, he won't get me to "waste" my time letting him try to convince me why that car would be a good choice for me. He has no way of knowing whether or not we can afford to buy the car so he needs to let the customer take it for a spin.
I guess my question is what on earth would make them think you weren't interested in or able to purchase the JGCherokee? I suppose, trying to see their perspective, if they knew somehow that you could not be able to ever purchase one, I can kind of understand not wanting to add mileage and take up sales floor time when there would be no sale.
It's not very good business though--as you say--someday you might just walk in with a bundle of cash to buy your dream care...but it won't be at that dealership.
I would have told him right there. I'll be spending my money elsewhere. It doesn't matter if you had cash in hand, or just browsing. Any good cars salesman would have tried to sale you on any car you looked at. Even, if you weren't going to get it. Now, you have the chance to walk away and put down their business. If you wanted to, you could see if there is someone you could talk to higher up in the company about their behavior. Cars are expensive. If you choose to look at a different dealership, that is money that they aren't getting. That was bad judgement on their part. It's not like, they are always swamped. They are to try to get you to buy a vehicle, and pursuade you into getting more options, better deals and so on.
Thank you everyone for your positive feedback. I've decided I will go for a more fuel economy SUV in the future. Success is a fleeting beast. Its here one day and gone the next. I was reading about Amanda Hocking's rags to riches story and she was worth $2 million after her fame in such a short time, but she was struggling with depression in the past year according to her blog and my heart sank for her and for the myth that success can bring you happiness. It can't and it never will. The only thing that brings me true happiness is my faith and that remains consistent whether I have a penny in my pocket or a million in my pocket.
Not a very smart salesman! Probably not making much money on sales with that type attitude. How would he know if you could afford it or not? That happened to me with a real estate agent...wasn't willing to answer my questions of buying a house because I wasn't ready to buy...3 yrs later I did buy a house...didn't buy from him!

I was getting out of my car on the way to do my job when a man stops me and explained his philosophy on door to door sales. He said that he would never buy a product that had to be sold at the door. It could be the best product or company in the world, but if it comes to his door he is not...

How to B.S. the car salesman......Okay, I'm a woman in the market for a used car and I AM doing my research. However, I've been taken advantage of before by salesmen and mechanics because it seems obvious I am ignorant when it comes to the engine. I'd like to show up on a lot and...
