I recently purchased my second Nissan LEAF. I had one in 2011 when they first came out, but I was living in a very rural area so it didn't work out too well for me. It really wasn't cut out for snowy, icy, muddy country roads (but I loved everything else about it). After about 18 months I traded it for an AWD vehicle. Now the lease is up on that AWD and in the meantime, we have moved from the rural area into town. So back in February I purchased a used LEAF. This car is perfect for about 95% of our driving. We have another larger gas vehicle that we use if we need to go more than about 80 miles. However, that's very rare!
The LEAF was cheap to buy and requires very little maintenance - just cabin air filter changes and tire rotations. Nissan pays to check the battery annually and that battery has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty.
I've been charging it at home about two or three times per week, plugging it in after work and setting the charging timer to charge after 10PM when the electric rates go down. When I leave for work in the morning I just unplug and go. I makes no significant impact on our electric bill. The only reason I stop at a gas station these days is for coffee!
Performance wise, this car moves! It provides 100% torque right off the line so it has no problem getting moving. I love to surprise folks at the stop light who are expecting me to putz along like a golf cart!
