Of course it's easier to drive an automatic, but I think you have to ask yourself a couple of questions.
1. Will you ever have a need to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission?
2. If you can drive a manual, then you can drive an automatic, however it doesn't work in reverse. So if you have an opportunity, I really like to see people learn on a manual.
3. If you need to buy a starter car because you don't have money to jump into a new vehicle, it's usually a lot cheaper to buy something manual!
4. It's so much more fun to drive a standard. You have so much more control.
Ultimately, if you don't forsee having to drive a manual, and aren't really interested in performance, then stick with the automatic, but if you think you'll ever need the skill of driving a manual, then go ahead and learn it now. It's like riding a bike, you'll never forget once you learn (though you may get a little rusty).
