Hi Ande - sorry to take so long to answer your question. It would be very pretentious of me to make any sort of judgement as to what is the 'best' European sports car - past or present. But, I can give you my own favourite. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a SuperCar in every sense of the word. With its hand-built 5.4 litre supercharged V8 engine, the SLR is a beast of a car - it has consistently achieved 0-60mph times of 3.2 to 3.4 seconds in tests. And yet, like so many Mercedes-Benz creations, it is a very beautiful car; and the use of carbon fibre for its entire body construction helps to make its fuel economy superior to that of many of its competitors. Incidentally, SLR stands for 'Sports, Light, Racing' - but there's nothing light about the price tag. One of these beauties would probably set you back half a million bucks or more; and in truth you would be lucky to find one, for the vehicle is now only produced in small numbers as 'limited editions'.
