Back to the 50s Annual Minnesota Car Show

Updated on July 7, 2015

Back to the 50's Cars

Do you have a love for classic cars? Where can you find over 11,000 classics in one place? At the Back to the 50's Car Show in St. Paul Minnesota hosted by the MSRA (Minnesota Street Rod Association)! I've created this lens to share with you the sights of this Annual car show that has become a yearly tradition for many families all around the country.

Every year we plan for this great event. Because our kids are still young, we usually just plan one day for them to go because they need lots of sit/food/water breaks. You can walk all day long at this event and still not see everything!

Sit back and enjoy this trip to the past!

History of the MSRA

One of the first events the MSRA hosted was a cruise night. They invited 200 friends to meet at St. Paul's Midway Shopping Center parking lot. After an impromptu car show some of the members cruised to a local theater where the streets were filled with rods and customs as the film "American Graffiti" let out. Just imagine the shock of the patrons leaving the theater to see the film come to life on the streets of St. Paul! After several years the event was moved to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Back To The 50s Weekend is attended by over 11,000 vehicles with more than 125,000 spectators making it the largest three day event of its kind in the world.

Rat Rods

What is a Rat Rod? A rat rod is a "unfinished" street rod that is intentionally left a bit rough around the edges. A Rat Rod is usually a vehicle that has had many of its non-critical parts removed. They are very often a conglomeration of parts and pieces of different makes, models and after market parts. The term "rat rod" was first used by the high dollar, show cars guys to describe the low-buck, home built drivers.

More than anything though, a Rat Rod is a piece of art! They get crowds of people gathering to admire the uniqueness of each car.

We've really been wanting to get to the back to the 50's show for the last couple years. Hopefully we'll be able to make it this year, we make those Custom acrylic plaques made from a photo of your vehicle. You may have seen them around. Fingers crossed that we can get there this year!

@anonymous: I think that is my most favorite car. The first time we saw it was at a car show in Jefferson, WI. I look for it every year. :)

nevermind! haha you got the yellow car with the sheet metal showing.

      nice!

I've been going since i was 5 and I'm 17 now. BTT 50s is my favorite part of the summer. By the way, you completely missed the car with the most realistic flames ever. It literally looks like the flames are peeling the paint off because it's painted to look like the sheet metal is showing. It is one of the nicest looking cars there.

My parents have a 1941 Chevy. We're not going this year but you can bet I'll be right back up there next year...with my OWN car :)
