What's the best online website to find a good car?

Updated on November 9, 2011

Where to find a car online

There are several places you can go online to find cars.

Depending on what part of the world you are in, one site might be great, but not well covered in another.

I am located in the United States, so I will provide those that I am familiar with.

Auto Trader.com

Auto Trader.com is a large well-established site. They currently list over 3 million cars.

Cars.com

Cars.com is another well-established site for buying, selling and researching car purchases.

Craigslist

Craigslist is one of my favorite places to look for cars. I am fond of bargains(okay, my wife says I am cheap) , and it is not unusual to find older cars for a song on Craigslist.

The last 4 cars I have bought have came from Craigslist. The latest one was a late model Mercury that I got for 1/2 of wholesale book value.

Edmunds.com

Edmunds is probably one of the oldest established sites for sellng, buying and researching cars.

When I first came across the phrase “Yahoo Autos”, I thought that like Yahoo's partnership with Microsoft, they are also investing in the automobile industry. I love using Yahoo as an efficient search engine, but never looked at their other services. For those love to peep into to automobile market and compare auto prices, or just for fun, want to know new car prices, Yahoo autos can be great site to visit at least for once.

What features I found interesting about Yahoo’s Car Deal site is-they provide a very useful car comparison tool. You may find other useful information such as new car, used car, green cars, latest car etc.

How to compare auto price in Yahoo Auto?

To me comparing to cars is one of the most important deciding factors before buying a car and yahoo autos offers to compare up to 4 cars at time. Their auto price comparing tool address is: http://autos.yahoo.com/car-compare/ After enter the site select the brand, model, and year, and then click the “add “ button, now the same way select the second car and then click on the “compare vehicles” button.

Let me show you with an example that how I compared car prices with Yahoo Auto. For getting a sample comparison I choose two cars- Toyota Matrix and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the following screen shots are the comparison details

Negotiating for a car can be a little tricky. You must know how to haggle for the best price and use those tricks on your sleeves. If you have one, then be prepared to use them.

If you don't know any tricks, check out Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst's Top Secret Car Secret and learn how to get 30% to even 90% of your new car

To prepare for a car price negotiations, you need to be familiar with the starting price of the car. Do a little research about manufacturer's suggested retail price of the car. Also, know which car is selling in your region. It might be because the suggested retail prices might be different from the actual selling price.

Know the demand and supply of cars. There are times when dealers have to negotiate a much higher price than the standard price due to added costs. Once you will be aware of the trend done by dealers, you will either accept the added cost or choose a car in low demand instead.

Bring with you an invoice price of the car when you want to negotiate for prices. Since invoices prices are the exact prices that the dealers have paid for the car, you can show the invoice price and deal for a much lower prices. If you are a smart negotiator, then you will surely do this exact tactic.

Another trick to negotiate for the price of the car is to do trade-ins. Most negotiators do not understand the importance of trade-in allowances. So before you think of buying a car, know how to negotiate well. Be willing to discuss the prices without making car dealers hide the increased car prices in financing.

Be familiar with jargon words and the standard options packages. Learn the language of dealers and how they work their way around customers. This is to avoid being scammed or getting tricked by any car dealers.

While negotiating for the car prices, it is better ask the car dealer if it includes all taxes and fees when purchasing the car. If you are a first time buyer, then you may be greatly surprised by the added fees. Don't be tricked of these fees since these fees are not usually included in the car price.

A car price negotiator must understand how to set a deal with car dealers. He or she must be willing to discuss any added options without getting a higher price. A negotiator must know when to put his foot down when being tricked of high car prices and costs. In short, always be smart when buying a car.
