Portable Collapsible Snow Shovels - Folding Snow Scoops

Updated on July 3, 2013

Snow shovels for the home can be stored in a garage or shed without too much inconvenience to the owner, after all, that's what storage sheds and garages are for - storage! However, it doesn't only snow when you are safe a comfortable at home and as anyone who lives in an area prone to heavy snowfall, it can mount up fast leaving your car stuck in a drift and you stuck without a ride unless you can dig your way out. That's just one of the reasons why you would want a portable snow shovel, but they are also useful for hiking, camping, backpacking, skiing and just about any other outdoor winter activity where snow is involved. A good snow shovel is an essential piece of safety equipment for backcountry skiing and should be carried by all who take their leisure time up in the mountains.

Collapsible Snow Shovels For Cars

If you live in an area prone to snow, or you travel over the mountains during the winter time to visit friends, family or for work related travel, you really should make a folding snow scoop part of your winter weather car safety kit. The best collapsible snow shovels are designed to save space in the trunk of your car, taking up less room, so you do not feel like you have to give up valuable trunk space to a bulky snow plough.

Small foldable snow shovels fold up to a fraction of their original size and are designed to be small enough to fit in your trunk without issue, but to also be big enough to clear snow from around your vehicle without making it too much of a chore. If you have extra space, opt for a collapsible snow shovel with a wide scoop as a wide snow shovel will clear snow faster than one with a narrow head.

Portable Snow Shovels For Backpacking and Winter Sports

For backpacking, skiing or any other kind of outdoor activity where you would benefit from taking a snow shovel along for the ride you need to look at a different set of requirements. Portable snow shovels for the car are still quite bulky in most cases and not something you would want to be walking around with whilst hiking in the mountains for example. Fortunately however, there are numerous small collapsible snow scoops which fold up and fit inside a backpack and are ideal for these kinds of activities. Mini snow shovels can be found in sports and outdoor stores or available online from various online retailers including some highly recommended examples below.

What To Look For When Buying A Foldable Snow Shovel

Snow shovel technology isn't exactly rocket science or full of bells and whistle and confusing acronyms like buying an HDTV might be, however there are some things you should look for to ensure you get exactly what you want.

The Length Of The Shaft Is Important

(that's what she said)

Most collapsible snow shovels have a good sized blade and have handles long enough to make their usage comfortable to users of average height. You do have to be careful however, as some manufacturers make the product more easy to store by shortening the length of the handle or mislead you by quoting the size of the shovel including the scoop when referencing handle length. You do need a decent size long handle or better still an adjustable snow shovel handle which can adjust to be comfortable for a range of personal heights or you will find you are bent over and shoveling snow becomes that much harder and more stressful upon your back and joints. Telescopic handles are the norm, although you will also find non-telescoping versions which actually break down into seperate parts and must be re-assembled when you want to use it.

A Portable Snow Shovel With A Wide Blade Is Better

Naturally, the size is important when shopping for a portable snow scoop as you are obviously looking for something small and easy to take along with you, but you also want to find a snow shovel with a wide scoop as well if you can. A wide scoop moves more snow with each shovel meaning you can move snow faster and expend less effort.

PVC Plastic Or Metal Snow Shovels

You want to make sure you find the most durable or sturdy snow shovel for your purposes because there is no point in buying something which is going to break when you are using it. Collapsible metal snow shovels are typically made of durable lightweight aluminum which is strong enough to move plenty of snow whilst at the same time keeping the weight of the shovel itself at a minimum. Cheap plastic snow scoops are typically a little lighter than portable aluminum show shovels but are also less durable in many cases and might not be suitable for heavy snow removal but they are often cheaper and might be just what you need if snow removal is only an occasional issue.

Additional Lenses About Snow Shovels

Mini snow scoops and portable snow shovels are great for on the go but for clearing snow from a path, patio, driveway etc. you will want at snow shovels with wheels for smaller areas or an electric snow thrower for larger driveways and path.

    ×"×

While I live in an area that rarely gets too much snow, I do occasionally have to shovel out the walk or sidewalk. I could definitely see where a portable shovel kept in the car could be very useful. Until I read this lens, I didn't even think about this.

    Good lens.

There is a huge need for these in the UK this year.

Our friends living there can't believe the amounts they have.
