Craftsman Mechanics Tools Set

Updated on June 25, 2014

Let me be the first to admit, I am not a mechanic.  But being the owner of a lawn care business does afford me the opportunity to work on a lot of mowers, trimmers, edgers, and blowers.   To do this, I needed a good set of tools, and the Craftsman mechanics tool set is what I got.

When I first started my business I had all my tools thrown into an old Army ammo can.  You know the kind that has a flip up lid?  Well, that can could hold a lot of.tools, but it was a pain in the butt.

If I needed a socket or a wrench I had to dig for it.  If it wasn't on top, I would have to pour the whole can out and spread the contents around until I found what I was looking for.

After doing that a few times, and then picking all the stuff up to place it back into the ammo can, I wised up  and started carrying a towel  around with me to dump all the tools out onto.  That way, when I was done with them, I could just pick up the four corners of the towel and then dump it all into the can.  It made it a lot easier than picking up each piece individually and placing them there.

Apparently, my wife got tired of hearing me complain about my cruddy little ammo can tool box, so for Christmas one year she bought me this 263 piece Craftsman Mechanics Tool Set.

When I opened this big old box up I was amazed at the perfect order every thing was laid out.  Each drawer is set up for its wrench size.  So if I needed a 1/4 socket, I know it is in the top drawer.  The 3/8's are in the middle, and the 1/2's are on the bottom.

The best thing about this set is that it is tough.  Not only are the tools great, but the box they come in is thick and sturdy.  I have had this set for about three years, and use it just about every day, and it is still about as good as new.

When the 1/4 drive wrench broke, all I had to do was run it up to Sears and they handed me a replacement on the spot.  The one they gave me was a used reconditioned one, but it worked.  That is all I cared about.  Plus, if it or any of the other tools break, I know that I can take them up and have them replaced.

The only drawback I can tell you about with this set is that it is heavy.  It starts out at 45 lbs and I have extra tools in the lid so it is even heavier.  If you have to lift it and haul it any distance, you may want to do so with a hand truck.

Overall I love it.  It has been one of my favorite gifts of all time, and at the price you can find it on Amazon, it can not be beat.

These are a few tools that do not come in the Craftsman Tool Set, but would be nice to have with it.
