    How can you tell if your car battery needs replacing or if it just needs recharging?

    Is there a way to tell when your car battery is towards the end of it's life?

    Most car batteries have an average life of only about 3 or 4 years... so if your battery seems to be going flat , and it's around that age, replacing it is simply a matter of time anyway, so why risk it?
    If a newer sealed battery goes flat, try to charge it -- if it won't hold a charge, replace it.
    If it's a battery with the filler ports, check to make sure they don't need water.
    You can test a battery with a volt meter, and if it reads less than 10 volts, charge or replace.

    A good battery should put out 12.6 volts.  Anything lower, its going bad.

    Why waste over $100 on a new battery based on speculation? The proper way to go about this is to slow charge the battery and then do a load test with the right equipment. Most chain parts retailers will do this free of charge. Before anything else, it's important to make sure that the terminal connections are clean and tight. It's also a good idea to have your starter tested for dragging/high amp draw and your alternator tested. There are a few late model cars that have an over running clutch pulley on the alternator that are failure prone. Loose and/or dirty connections, a dying starter or alternator can drastically shorten the life of your battery.
