Malfunctioning Drivers

Some thing so minor could cost you thousands.
Some thing so minor could cost you thousands.

What about car manufacturers? There seems to be a major problem with them putting options and standard equipment in their vehicles lately. Standard equipment is now the luxury. E.g.; power windows, power door locks, Air conditioning, Cruise control, GPS, etc... But what they are forgetting is a pretty major safety item. It is the turn signal.

Driving home from work today, 25-minute commute that takes me through, 1 roundabout, 3 lane merges (1 highway), 3 highway off ramps, 6 light controlled intersections, and long sections of 4 lane roads where people change lanes regularly. I encountered 36 vehicles that don't have the safety equipment installed, called the turn signal. Seeing such a mix of Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Jeep, and even those 'high end luxury' cars like Mercedes, Lexus, Acura, really got me thinking. Just how do you get these company's to start correcting the problem. My first thought and really the only one is to try and talk to someone in the government about this problem.

Malfunctioning Drivers

Now I have not bought a new car for many years, I decided to go to some car lots and look at new cars. Test driving as many new cars as possible, and asking about what options came with their cars and what was standard equipment. Well to my shock and awe, all vehicles still have signal lights as standard equipment. That threw me for a real loop. What was I to do next? Well I went and talked to Safe Driving Instructors and asked them has it gone by the way side to teach people about the proper use of signal lights. All 3 of them I talked to said no they really enforce the use of signal lights as it does prevent car accidents, because it lets either the on coming vehicle or the following vehicle know what you intend to do at the up coming intersection or off ramp or round about.

Wow that is awesome so there are people out there that do know they have one installed in the vehicle as well as know how and when to use it. So I asked them, how do you teach people proper use of turn signals if they already have their drivers licence? They are in the same situation as I am they said. It is really shocking why people don't use their turn signals. Statistics show that in-car distractions are the leading cause of all accidents.

Now in-car distractions are not just cell phones, they are eating, changing music player play lists, watching movies, applying make up, looking for an item in car, reaching for a moving object inside the car, and even reading a book. Come on people there is a time and place for doing things, but reading a book, applying make up, and many other distractions are the leading cause of accidents! When you are doing such acts you neglect the use of signal lights for proper lane changes, turning corners, exiting highways, using a round about. The sad part about this is how many children were in these cars that neglected to use signal lights on my commute. If we want the next generation (our Children) to better and smarter drivers it is the parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts that have to show them how to do things properly. I know that there isn’t a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle that would like to be the cause of a serious or even deadly accident with their family aboard, or a family in the other vehicle. So the equipment is there to use, let's use it and don't be a statistic. Let’s get rid of malfunctioning drivers by using your turn signal when required, then you can prevent an accident instead of causing one.

This might help to remind you to use your turn signals.
