Shelby Cobra Diecast

Updated on January 31, 2016

SHELBY COBRA DIECAST of America's Most Sought-After Muscle Car!

The Shelby Cobra 427 was the fastest, wildest, sexiest, and most heart-pounding muscle car on American roads.

Anyone with racing fuel running through their blood wanted one. But with only a little over a thousand ever built, originals commanded prices of well over a million dollars! And in one extreme case ... $5.5 Million!

So what's a Shelby Cobra enthusiast to do?

Shelby Cobra Diecast are an inexpensive way to stoke your desire for this ultimate muscle car. On this site I've assembled some of the best Shelby Cobra 427 Diecast Cars for sale by some of the most creative designers, modelers, and artists around.

So if you have racing fuel for blood, then a Shelby Cobra Diecast car may be the next best thing to owning the real thing!

SUPER SNAKE - THE CAR:

Twin Paxton superchargers - 800 horsepower - the Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake is The Ultimate Muscle Car and most expensive American car ever sold!

  • "When I built this dual supercharged 427 Cobra in 1966, I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road,"
  • said Carroll Shelby.
  • "Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world. It's the fastest street legal Cobra I've ever owned."

There were only two Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake ever built. One was Carroll Shelby's personal 427 Super Snake (CSX3015) and the other Super Snake (CSX3303) Shelby built for close friend and famed comedian Bill Cosby.

Cosby's first drive in that car scared the crap out of him so much he returned it to Shelby. That fright-induced experience eventually became one of Bill Cosby's most famous comedy skits called "Bill Cosby 200 MPH" and the "Cosby on The Tonight Show" routine with Jay Leno. Have a listen ... they're both hilarious!

  • "Ladies and gentleman, I was idling... I was idling... the car had not moved, I had not put my foot on the gas pedal... and it was killing people..." - Bill Cosby

This second Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake was subsequently sold to Tony Maxey who, very sadly and unfortunately, destroyed it in a fatal crash off of a cliff into the Pacific Ocean leaving just CSX3015 as the only one-of-its-kind in the world.

CSX3015 was last owned by Harley E. Cluxton III, who recently sold it at the 36th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in 2007. The bidding went crazy (videos below), and when it ended the Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake sold for $5.5 Million making it the most expensive American car ever sold!

Back in February 1968, Road & Track magazine referred to the Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake CSX3015 as "The Cobra to End All Cobras." Thirty nine years later, that same CSX3015 Super Snake broke the all time sales records at Barrett-Jackson! A car truly worth immortalizing.

SUPER SNAKE - THE DIECAST:

A couple years ago I was given a Franklin Mint 1:24 scale diecast of the Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake. I was really impressed ... the detail was phenomenal, the accuracy so real you'd think it was actually a real car in miniature that could start up and peel away.

This Franklin Mint diecast is a Limited Edition of 5,000 worldwide ... a few more than the one-of-a-kind original. Item number B11E792. They are precision-engineered, built, painted and polished by hand from more than 150 separate components.

I really enjoy the one I have, but alas it's not 100% perfect. I have three minor issues with it, none of them deal breakers preventing me from ever buying another Franklin Mint:

  • The hood is not diecast like the rest of the body so for some strange reason the paint color is slightly darker than the body in certain angles and light conditions.
  • The glue holding the hood to the hinges dried out so the hood just fell off and is now loose.
  • The car's suspension, being spring loaded, sits too high - it's at the top of the suspension travel - so there's way too much gap between the tires and fenders so it looks like it's on stilts as compared to the original real Cobra 427 Super Snake.

So again, no major issues, and a couple are easily fixable. I just plan to reattach the hood to the hinge with modellers glue and lower the car to proper ride height with some creative custom fabricated suspension tweeks.

As I'm not overly concerned about maintaining the intrinsic value of this limited edition collectible diecast ... I just want it to sit "correct" like the original car ... therefore my willingness to make modifications. There's nothing I can do about the hood paint color though. Pity.

Overall, the Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake by Franklin Mint is an excellent Shelby Cobra Diecast collectible muscle car for anyone who loves the cars Carroll Shelby built.

The next Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake I plan to get will be a 1:18 scale version. I have a much greater collection of 1:18 diecast that really begs having the badass evil-looking Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake parked in there with the rest of them.

I wish I could afford a real Cobra but, since at the moment I cannot I would opt for the "1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C in Aluminum Diecast" because it looks down right cool.
