Where to Find Cool Classic Air-Cooled VW Buses

Welcome to Vintage VW Cars and Buses, featuring the wonderful restoration work of Minneapolis Volkswagen enthusiast John Snell the Tenth.

Here, you'll find mostly vintage VW buses for sale (Beetles, Ghias, and air-cooled Porsches, too), photos of past and current restoration projects, as well as some background on the wonderful world of vintage Volkswagens, with stories from enthusiasts around the world, and perhaps even info on upcoming classic car shows, VW swap meets, and other events— that sounds swell to me, how about you?

Our vintage vehicles usually sell pretty quick, but if you are lucky you might catch one while you are here.

- Happy V-Dubbin!

1962 23-Window VW Bus Project

A resto project for the true enthusiast! This is one rusty bus... but with some loving care (okay a LOT), she may be worth over $200k. This is the same year and model as the famous Barrett Jackson bus! If you have the tools and time, she is one fine investment!

Other than some rust this bus is nice and straight in the sides and nose. This bus was built late August of '61 making this one of the first "fried egg" front turn signal buses made. If you are looking for a fun project bus, this is a perfect example with a big reward when you are done.

Poll: Do you name your car? Surely you name your car? No, and don't call me Shirley

How much do you love your vintage VW, or plain old vroom vroom? Many V-dubbers I know think of their cars and buses as part of the family and fondly give them a name. I'm wondering how many of you fine folks name your car.

Do you name your car?

After a Three-Year Restoration, This Is One Mighty Cool Deluxe Bus

If the previous photo is the before, this one is what can happen after a no-expense-spared restoration! This 1961 23-Window VW Bus was completed in May of 2014 and turned out as one of the most amazing Sambas I have seen.

An extensive restoration by Jeff Gagnon of Vintage VW in Sioux Falls, SD sets this 23-Window bus up as a contender to the famous Barrett Jackson bus that sold for over $200,000!

But WHY!! What makes them so special and so valuable that they will fetch mid 5 figures even in the rustiest condition?

Guess you just can't put a price tag on nostalgia, and these fun buses exude nostalgia by the bucket load - I mean who wouldn't love to have one of these world famous buses to tool around town in?

Below you'll find a walk around video of one of these popular 23-Window VW Buses.

Featured 1965 VW Bus

Sunset Classics and Vintage VW Cars have a nice collection of videos on the ol' YouTube, and to start you off check out the fantastic 1965 VW Bus - a 21-Window VW Deluxe bus or Samba with skylights, sunroof, a 1776cc engine, and safari windows! I love those safari windows, how about you?

If something a little wild crazy and shagadelic is your thing, head on over and check out the video— if you are looking for a cheap bus, this is your gal, but she's not cheap in the sense that you wouldn't want to be seen with her behind the bleachers kinda cheap, she's more the long walks on the beach and a good toasty campfire at night kinda cheap (I don't know where I'm going with that— you can bring her home for a paltry $3995, that's what I'm sayin').

This is a beauty— a lowered California 1965 21-Window VW bus with a 1776cc engine, skylight sunroof, and those safari windows I sure do love.

Classics like this are becoming harder to find. When one comes up for auction, they tend to go quickly. That certainly was the case with this nice blue bus as it sold before the auction completed.

1961 Split-Window VW Bus

This fine VW Bus has sold but you can still see more for sale on the ever popular Volkswagen Bus for Sale page! The VW Bus holds an iconic place in the hearts of people world wide, even if you didn't grow up when these classic buses were first made, you can still enjoy the lifestyle in a great bus like this.

Here we have a Southern California Split-Window that is very solid. (Gotta love those Cali deserts for finding great old buses.) The engine (1600cc) was line board, has fresh bearings, and brand new pistons and cylinders were installed. The builder of the motor has done several VW motors in the past (including some for racing) so you can be sure this was done right. So pack up the camping gear and hit the road in this spiffy split-window bus.

More details, photo galleries, and videos of our current Volkswagen Beetles for sale.

It's a bit chilly for camping season around these parts, but with this great '74 Westy Pop-top bus you can enjoy a mighty fine road trip year round. All decked out in some classic '70's Yosemite Yellow paint with a blue and green plaid interior. It has a sink, a stove, and a refrigerator, and sleeps four adults comfortably.

1957 Oval Window Beetle Restoration

Follow the restoration progress of this cool old Oval-Window Beetle. Below are before and after (ready to be painted) photos of this vintage '57 Oval Window Beetle. For the complete story of the car's history and restoration process, look it up at Vintage VW Cars.

A Super Fine Orange 1970 Karmann Ghia

This beautifully restored 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia features a rebuilt engine, new interior, sunroof, and CD player, as well as many more fine additions. The best addition could be YOU behind the wheel.

This great Ghia was one of the first cars sold after starting Sunset Classics so she has a special place in our hearts, but we've had the pleasure of offering many more Ghias for sale.

If you aren't familiar with VW Beetles, they have a mighty fine turning radius as shown in this fun little vid! (That's John, the funky fresh founder of Vintage VW Cars, driving.

Great lens! I'm on my second Dub - a MK3 Jetta - 'Liebe''s only my second because I had an '88 Fox - 'Dieter', that was my miracle car I've ever had - drove it for thirteen years and still miss it. HAD to sell it, and the guy that bought it dropped a new engine in it, and is allegedly racing it....

In 1961 at 20 I had just gotten married and my new wife wanted a 'bug' so bad that we went to the dealer in Croton, NY which was on rt 9 just uo from the rr station and ordered a white 'bug' which was very reasonable in cost. Dealer said that it woud be in the following week and he would call us to finalize everything. A week and a half or more later I finally called to get a status report on the order and was told that it was delayed for a week. lol Happened three more times and he finally told me the truth "it was back-ordered because of the high denand and we would unfortunately have to wait till ours was made. We decided right their and then to cancel. I realty think that both us would really have liked that car but we just could not wait. I have never owned a Volkswagen. Great lens though and some unique models which I would have considered.

      Thank you for sharing.

Great lens. Lots of fun to drive a vintage Beetle. And no emissions testing to deal with. I have a 1974 super beetle that I must sell. no more room to park. Its just like my first beetle back in 1973 that brings back many fine memories. I wish they all could be CA cars.
