How To Add & Organise Products in Basic and Premium Shops

Owning a Cafepress shop is great for people looking to have fun designing slogans and images, whilst potentially earning a nice amount of money on the side. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, and it you certainly won't make money fast, but if you enjoy designing anyway then this hobby is an ideal outlet for that.

I have written a tutorial below on how to add your chosen products to your Cafepress shop, how to add and resize your designs, change your prices, create different section/categories, plus how to make use of many more tools and functions beside. More and more merchandise is being added all the time to the website, and it's always fun to design for new products...especially the more unusual ones!

I hope you find this series useful :)

Adding Products to your Basic Shop - Step 1

- This tutorial starts assuming that you have just uploaded and tagged the designs you want to apply to Cafepress products.

- Sign in to Cafepress.

- Click on the 'Your Shops' tab in the top-right of the screen. Find your shop in the list of basic shops (if you only have one shop, there will only be 1 row). To the right of your basic shop name will be links reading 'Customize', 'Products' and 'Buy'.

- Click 'Products'.

- Click the grey 'Add a Product' button.

- A page will appear like the one shown above. Click on the 'Make Selections' link underneath the 'All Products' title.

Adobe Photoshop Elements

This software is a great choice for designing your own t-shirt graphics, without paying for the expensive, full version of Photoshop:

Adding Products to your Basic Shop - Step 2

- In a basic shop you can only have 1 of each product, and can only pick up to 80 products from the 'All products' screen which appears. Simply select the tick-box in the top-left corners of the product photos to choose your products, then press the green 'Add Selections' button.

- You will see a yellow box with your product selections listed inside. Click the green 'Add These Products' button.

Adding Products to your Basic Shop - Step 3

- You will now see a page like shown above. Click the 'check all items' tick box (labelled with number 1 on the image above). This will select all of your products. Alternatively, you can just individually select the products which you want to customize by clicking each product photo's tick box in the top-left corner.

- Click on the arrow of the drop-down menu (labelled as number 2 on the image above) and select 'Add/Change Image'. Click the green 'Go' button.

Adding Products to your Basic Shop - Step 4

- You will see the list of your selected products on the left. Some of the products such as the tote bags will have 2 tick boxes in their row. You can see in the picture above that the beach tote has a tick box in not only the 'Front' column but also the 'Back' column. This means that you have the option to add the image to both the front and the back of the bag. This is a good idea so click the right-hand check box to do that.

Bear in mind that there is an extra charge for customers if you print on the back on some products. A charge does not apply to bags or thongs, but I think it does apply to t-shirts and the other products.

- Click the green 'Choose an Image' button.

Adding Products to your Basic Shop - Step 5

- Find the design you want to apply to your products and click on the blue 'select' link underneath.

- Click 'Apply Changes'.

- Browse through your products to check them. If there are any products where the image is not completely visible i.e. is too big for the space allowed on the product, click on the product photo. Alter the image size using the drop-down menu under 'Select Image Height' on the right-hand side, until you can see the whole image and it is the size you want.

- If there are colour options for the product, you can change the colour of the product displayed in your shop by clicking on the chosen coloured square underneath the product photo. If your image looks bad on a particular colour background, you can remove that colour option from the shop by un-selecting the relevant tick box.

- When finished, click the blue 'Done' link on a grey tab above the product photo.

- You can change the price mark-up, name and description of your products by selecting the tick-boxes of the products you want to amend (like you did to change the image previously), then choosing the option you want from the drop-down menu and pressing 'Go'. Then just do what changes you need to do and that's it! Your products are now on sale :-)

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 1

- This tutorial starts assuming that you have just uploaded and tagged the designs you want to apply to Cafepress products.

- Sign in to Cafepress.

- Click on the 'Your Shops' tab in the top-right of the screen. Find your shop in the list of premium shops (if you only have one shop, there will only be 1 row). To the right of your shop name will be links reading 'Customize', 'Sections/Products', 'Payment Plan' and 'Buy'.

- Click 'Sections/Products'.

- A good tip I have found useful for premium shops is to first create a section (which I call my 'Template' section) where you store the products you want to sell in your shop, so that you can just copy from here when you add a new section/design, instead of having to go through the steps of finding and selecting which products you want each and every time (I'll demonstrate what I mean later!)

- To create this template section, first click on the grey 'Add a Section' button (as you can see in the picture above).

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 2

- On the page that appears, I always choose the 'I'd like to start customizing my section' link because I think it's easier to use, but you can experiment using both to see which method you personally prefer.

- Clicking that link will take you to the 'Section Info' page. Name the section (e.g. 'Template'). In this particular section you don't need to write anything else because it isn't going to be displayed in your shop and the products aren't going to be for sale - this section is simply to help you build your shop.

- At the bottom of this page you can set the pricing to use in your shop. Personally I go for 'Marketplace Pricing' so that the products are the same price in your shop as they are in the marketplace, but of course it's up to you!

- Right at the bottom you can choose how many products are displayed per row in your shop. I keep it at 3 but obviously this is your choice.

- When you've done that, click the green 'Save' button.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 3

- Click the grey 'Add a Product' button.

- A page will appear like the one shown above. Click on the 'Make Selections' link underneath the 'All Products' title.

- You will now see a page showing all the available products. Use the drop-down menus to choose how many of each product you would like to include. I suggest selecting 1 each of every product you would like to include in your shop. It's best to have too many products to choose from than too few because you never know what a customer is looking for, or what their favourite product is.

- When you've selected the ones you want, click 'Add Selections'.

- You will now see a yellow box with your product selections listed inside. Click the green 'Add These Products' button.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 4

- You will now see your products displayed. If you would like to change the order of the products so that you group women's clothes together, men's clothes together etc then now is the time to do it.

- To re-order the products, click the grey 'Rearrange' button. This will bring up a list of your products. Click a product name and use the green arrows to move it up or down. You can move blocks of products by highlighting more than one product name at a time (left click, hold and drag to highlight them).

- Click 'Save' when you've finished rearranging.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 5

- Press the green 'Save' button to go back to your shop front workshop.

- You will see something like the orange box shown above. There are buttons labelled 'Edit', 'Copy', 'Move', 'Hide' and 'Remove' which are pretty self-explanatory. Click 'Hide'. This will turn the box grey, and this means that the products and section are not displayed in your shop i.e. are hidden from the public.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 6

- Now it's time for adding the sections and products which will be viewable, and therefore on sale, to the public. Have a little think about the sections you want and how you want to split up your products. I will now show you how to set up your first non-hidden section, and I will call it 'Animal Designs'.

- First, do what you have previously done to create a section ('Add a Section' > 'I'd like to start customizing my section') except when you get to the 'Section Information' section, you need to add more information that you did with the hidden template section.

- Add the title of the section under 'Section Name' i.e. 'Animal Designs' in this example. To make it easier for a search engine to find your shop designs, it is best to add a short 'Section Teaser' (which will be displayed under your section name on your shop front) and 'Section Description' (which will be shown within your section, above the section contents). Try to put keywords relevant to your designs in these text sections.

- I leave the default settings blank, set the price to 'Marketplace Pricing' and keep the 'Items Across' as 3, but feel free to change these if you like.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 7

- It is important that you select an image to appear on your shop front to represent the designs within that particular section and encourage people to click. I either create a brand new image to represent the section (often from a selection of products from within the section as a preview), or just pick one good design which is available in that section.

- You should see 3 green buttons on top of each other reading 'Upload Image', 'Select Image' and 'Remove Image'. Click on the 'Select Image' button.

- Find the design in your 'Image basket' which you want to use, and click on the blue 'Select' link underneath. If the image hasn't been uploaded yet, do that now (instructions on how to do that are in my beginner's guide part 2).

- Click the green 'Save' button. The page that appears shows the contents of your section i.e. nothing - so now we need to add your designed products!

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 8

- The best way I think to do this is have a separate section for each separate design. So there will be (in this example), the 'Animal Designs' title and image on the shop home page, and when that is clicked on, each of the animal related designs will be displayed with separate titles and images too. This method looks neat and organised.

- So, once again, create a section. This time, add the title, teaser and description related to just the specific design you are about to add. In this example, I'm adding my lion design, so the Section title is 'Lion' (imaginative). Use the actual design from the media/image basket as the image you choose to represent the section.

- Now you have an empty section, so it's time to add the products. This is where your template section come in to play.

- Press the grey 'Import' button.

- Find your shop name in the box and click the little arrow next to it. This will show your shop content. Click on 'The Template' section title and press the green 'Next' button.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 9

- You can select the 'check all items' tick box if you wish to add all of the template products to your new section, or you can select the ones you want individually.

- Press 'Import'.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 10

- You should now see the contents of your new section. Click the 'check all items' tick box, which will select all of your products. Alternatively, you can just individually select the products which you want to add the image to by clicking each product photo's tick box in the top-left corner.

- Click on the arrow of the drop-down menu and select 'Add/Change Image'. Click the green 'Go' button.

- You will see the list of your selected products on the left. Some of the products such as the tote bags will have 2 tick boxes in their row. You can see in the picture above that the tote has a tick box in not only the 'Front' column but also the 'Back' column. This means that you have the option to add the image to both the front and the back of the bag. This is recommended so click the right-hand check box to do that.

Bear in mind that there is an extra charge for customers if you print on the back on some products. A charge does not apply to bags or thongs, but I think it does apply to t-shirts and the other products.

- Click the green 'Choose an Image' button.

- Find the design you want to apply to your products and click on the blue 'select' link underneath.

- Click 'Apply Changes'.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 11

- Browse through your products to check them. If there are any products where the image is not completely visible i.e. is too big for the space allowed on the product, click on the product photo. Alter the image size using the drop-down menu under 'Select Image Height' on the right-hand side, until you can see the whole image and it is the size you want.

- If there are colour options for the product, you can change the colour of the product displayed in your shop by clicking on the chosen coloured square underneath the product photo. If your image looks bad on a particular colour background, you can remove that colour option from the shop by un-selecting the relevant tick box.

- You can also choose whether the design is centred on the product or placed in the 'pocket' area at the bottom-right of this page.

- When finished, click the blue 'Done' link on a grey tab above the product photo.

Adding Products to your Premium Shop - Step 12

- Now you need to add a title and description. To do this, click on the 'check all items' tick box, click the arrow of the drop-down menu and select 'Change Name'. Press the green 'Go' button.

- Enter a name for your design. I entered 'Lion', so that before every product name, 'Lion' will be inserted e.g. 'Lion White T-Shirt'.

- Click 'Apply Changes'.

- Use the same method to change the products' description (pick 'Change Description' this time instead of 'Change Name' in the drop down menu). Write a short description which describes the design. This description is seen by the customer when they view the product, so use the description to try and persuade the customer to buy.

- That's it! You have now added your own designed products to your shop, well done! All you have to do now is to repeat this process to add more products and more designs to your shop, within organised sections. Have fun :-)

I don't use my shop much at all, but I have one little cartoony image that seems to sell. I wanted to add that image to another product, and I'll be darned if I couldn't figure out how to do it because it had been so long, and the interface had changed. So, thanks so much for your tutorial!
