I am a mother and I know first hand how tasking it can be trying to combine career and motherhood. Most times, I get tired from carrying out my activities at work as well as the hours I spend in traffic and at the end of the day, I'm too spent to give my daughter the time and affection she needs.

I recently took a one-month leave from work and spent to bulk of this time with my her. She was the happiest I'd ever seen and this short time showed me clearly just what I'd been missing working my butt off and giving her whatever little time I could spare.

Now I have decided to resign from my job and go into a few jobs or careers that would not just make me money, but would also give me ample time to spend with my daughter.

These jobs are great for every single mom who has the same or similar goal and the good thing is that you can have one or more of these income streams up and running in no time.

That being said, here are

The right career will not just put money in your pocket consistently, but will also give you quality time to spend with your kids.

7 Great Careers Every Single Mom Can Earn Money From

1. Sell Ebooks Online

I discovered ebook publishing in 2013 and published my first ebook May of that year. Shockingly (I never thought anyone would pay for information that can be gotten freely online) I sold the first copy of that book two days after it went live. It was only $.099, but the fact that I could even make a cent from my intellectual skill was enough to make me dig out the creative juice in me and and I set to publishing more books.

However, my zeal for publishing started to wane after a while, or should I say I was beginning to find it stressful combining my day job and night time writing. Soon, the lack of sleep hours started to tell on me and I decided to take a break.

However, one beautiful thing I noticed during my hiatus is the fact that I continued to earn from the books already published on Amazon platform. These books continued to sell (one time I sold 15 copies of one of my books in two days) and each month, I get my earnings for the previous two months deposited in my Payoneer account.

As a single mom, ebook publishing is one great way to make a steady amount income. There have been writers who published a single book and went on to sell several hundreds and even thousands of copies of the said book, earning several hundred thousand dollars from these sales.

EBook publishing a seamless way to make a living consistently as a single mom. You write the book once and earn from it for life.

I introduced this means of making money to my little sister who is also a single mom and while she was very interested, the one complaint she gave was that she isn't too good in writing as she doesn't even like it. However, I was able to help here by giving her a simple solution around this problem:

If you don't like writing but would still love to publish ebooks, then you can go around this by getting writers online. I gave her a few sites to get writers:

- Fiverr.com
- Probloggers.com/job
- Freelancer.com

While this method works, the downside to it is that you will spend some money. However, it is usually a worthwhile investment that will put money back in your pocket for life.

Again, if you would love to self-publish books but don't have a budget for it, another thing you can do is publish low or no content books on Amazon.

Low or no content books are books like journals, diaries, guest books, birthday books, colouring books, etc that contain very little content.

These books sell a lot and you could make a nice amount of money each month publishing them. Publishing these books requires a little bit of designing though, before you can get the hang of it. However, you can usually circumvent this by making use of the Canva app to design not just your book interior, but the ecover as well.

I stumbled upon a video by Barbara Everett on how to use Canva to create stunning ebooks and that was all I needed to get started.

I currently have close to fifty low content books on well-researched niches and I make a reasonable amount from the sales of these books books month.

2Venture into Drop-shipping

I haven't personally tried into drop shipping, but I have a few friends who have and are quite successful too. If I already wasn't into a number of businesses both online and offline, this is one business I would definitely consider.

Drop-shipping business work on a simple logic: you identify a hot-selling product, locate interested buyers which you connect to the manufacturer of said product and you earn a commission while at it.

There is no limit to the amount of money you can make drop-shipping products and the best part is that you don't get to bother yourself with the heavy stuff that goes with selling like product storing or delivering.

As a single mom if you decide to go into this business, you can choose to build an ecommerce site to display the products you'd be selling. This method is great as it gives your chosen products more exposure which in turn greatly boosts your sales potentials.

3. Take a Sewing Course

I learnt how to sew in 2005 while I waited for my one-year compulsory National Youth Service the following year. I knew I had almost a year before this programme started and didn't want it to go to waste, so I decided to learn a skill.

This skill has served me greatly over the years as it continues to put money in my pocket.

Let me say though, that unlike most careers you can start as a single mom with very little training, sewing is one career that requires you get some moderate to extensive training before you can even practice.

You might also need to spend some time perfecting as this is the only way you will get seasoned enough to make money off of this skill.

However, once you become good at it, it stays for life!

I make some amount of money selling ready-to-wear dresses for little girls and women which I sell via Facebook and on my personal site. I also make beddings like bedsheets, pillow cases, duvets, and thowpillows.

I should warn you though that sales from this skill doesn't come often; there are seasons when I get so much orders, I practically have to stay awake to meet up and then there are those times when the orders just seem to dry up.

It is at moments like this I am grateful I have more than one income streams.

4. Join One or More Freelance Writing Sites

This is yet another career you should consider as a single mom.

I have written for a few freelancing sites online including

- Freelancer.com
- Fiverr.com
- Zemandi.com
-Channels.cc (defunct)

And earned a steady amount of money. The beauty of these sites is that I worked on them remotely, which gave me ample time as I was pregnant and sick at the time.

You can choose to write for one or more of these sites. However, you might want to consider a few things including their payment rates, medium of payment and how genuine or timely they are with payment before choosing to sign up n any of these freelancing platforms.

5. Run a Blogging

Blogging is HARD work. I just had to put that out there so you know what you are getting into if you do decide to opt for this career as a single mom.

Can you make money from blogging? H*ell, yes! Lots of it. However, you would need to put in a lot of man hours at the beginning before you can even begin to see any earnings. However, once the money starts coming, it never stops.

Blogging is a sweet, sweet way to earn passive income so long as your blog exists. Your blog can also grow to a point where brands will fight to be allocated an advert slot and then you can set your price (hopefully not so high it scares them running to your competitors).

There are so many ways you can earn from your blog once you start getting a steady influx of traffic. Some of these include:

- Affiliate marketing
- Google Adsense or any other high-earning ad program
- Direct advert placement
- Sponsored posts
- Guest posting (not moral, but still a way to make money

So, you should concentrate on building your site traffic (it could sometimes take a year or two before you get to that sweet spot) and soon you'll be smiling to the banks.

6. Run a Daycare Center

If you love kids, then what better way to live out this love than to run a daycare center.

Starting and running a daycare is not as easy as it sounds though as you'd have to put a few things in place including drafting a good business plan (or getting someone to do so for you), getting the required certifications, looking for the right facility, hiring trained and competent staff to mention but a few.

However, it is one business that offers a lot of returns including the joy and satisfaction you will get caring for kids who have been entrusted into your care.

7. Go Into Graphics Designing

Lastly, if none of the above-mentioned income streams is to your liking, then yet another you can try out as a single mom is graphics design.

Graphics design requires you get trained, but once you do, there is no limit to how much you can make each month.

      @poppy

I don't make all that much, just enough to take care of some bills. However, I personally know people who make a whole lot more and wish I knew their secret.

Yes, fiverr is a place where you will see a lot of people looking to write whole ebooks for a competitive price, which is great for anyone with a budget.

      Thanks for stopping by.

I'm impressed you make money from ebooks without having to pay for advertising. You're definitely one of the 1%. I use Fiverr and I was surprised to see how many people approach me to write books for them. A win-win situation; thank you for suggesting it!
