A Boss from Heaven

Updated on March 28, 2010

No, I’m not referring to Hugo Boss – even though it smells heavenly….

I have worked for a very long time and was reflecting on the bosses I had worked with, when one stood out – Godfrey. He was a very kind boss. Infact, I’ll list his Qualities, so you have an idea of who he is:

  • He was very professional - always dressed smart too.
  • He appreciated what his staff did, gave feeback.
  • Very encouraging and supportive of staff.
  • Approachable and respectful – no matter your Grade.
  • liked to see his staff progress and pushed them to promotion.
  • He was confident in his Staff, trusted them to deliver.
  • Had a good sense of humour.
  • He was well respected and did his job well too.

Godfrey was my first Boss, I worked with him in the 90s in a Government Job in Liverpool. I was just an Admin Assistant and he was a Grade 7. (A bit higher than a Higher Executive Officer, for those who understand Government jobs in UK)

What I really appreciated about him was that he always found opportunities to put me on a higher grade. Our office was busy, so he’d always fill in a form for me to be on “Temporary Promotion to Admin Officer” for a few months. So even though I was an Admin Assistant, I was constantly on the salary of an Admin Officer. Also when we had high profile events, he’d make sure I was involved, which meant I got to travel with other colleagues of higher grade to London, stay in nice hotels and get to see celebrities supporting our campaigns – not to talk of the generous expenses we got paid, for being away from home. He was nice to every one and his partner worked on the same floor with us too. She was lovely.

Sleeping in the same room with my Boss.

OK. It’s not what your thinking. Once we travelled down to London and arrived at our hotel in the evening about 8pm – The Strand Palace, Hotel. There were about 5 of us. Me, two other colleagues, Godfrey and his Partner. The hotel Receptionist said it was very full (even though our travel agency had made booking). She then looked at us and said there was a big room with 3 beds. Godfrey, his partner and myself then looked at each other. I was thinking: “Oh God, please No!!” They were probably thinking the same as they were a couple. I mean, I don't snore but what if that night of all nights, I snored loudly or started talking in my sleep? or what if they....... Oh! I'm not even going there!

Long story short, they managed to find suitable rooms and I got the room with the 3 beds. So every time we got back to the hotel after a work event – I felt like Goldilocks. Only this time I was asking myself.. “Hmmmh, which bed shall I sleep in today?" I also enjoyed the Triple daily supply of refreshments.

Due to working with Godfrey, I have got to meet Will Carling (Rugby Star), didn't even know who he was until my colleagues asked me to get his autograph for them. Also, met some Gladiator stars and have been to visit inside the Prime Ministers Place at 10 Downing Street - all work related. Will supported our Health Campaign. I won’t write much here. (keep it modest) I have worked with other very nice bosses over the years, (and one or two - not so nice) but you can see why he will always be a boss that I’ll remember. I think also because it was my first Job. I worked with him for about 3 years and then parted ways, as I got a Promotion on Transfer to our London Office.

Cheers Godfrey!

A delightful read and Godfrey is the type of boss that should be in every company. I was fortunate enough to have a boss like Godfrey before I left on early retirement. Now we keep in touch through emails, and an occasional lunch date. He is a beautiful soul...

This is a nice hub complimenting one of your bosses. Infact there are good and bad bosses. Some you may never forget for their good deeds. Some also you may never forget for their bad deeds.

Lady_E, I was scared when I read the sleeping in a hotel room with your boss. Its ok.

Ah!! Bosses, we've all heard this comment, "The Boss is coming, quick look busy!"

Sometimes the boss is only as good as those who work with him and vise-versa. i have had both kinds, nice and nasty. i have also been the boss on numerous occassions with only one downfall that i can remember. i broke two fingers of one of my mechanics while helping him drive the pin out of the the track on a bulldozer... i was swinging the sledge-hammer... he forgave me! Great read, thx, L.

** Hi Lorlie, I'm positive he's retired now. Hopefully, with a very nice pension. He's probably cruising with his partner on their boat. I have visited the boat once on the way to one of our events. Thanks for stopping. :)

** Cheers Mike. Its a pity you worked with such a person. Sometimes money changes people and it gets to their head abit. I bet you make a brilliant manager and I hope your staff give you peace of mind. Regards.

** It does Hello Hello. If you have a bad boss, one hour at work seems like one day already. lol. Thanks for stopping.

** Dreamreachout - Thats Brilliant and gives excellent results. I hope in return your business continues to be a success. Thats a lot of good Karma.

** Hi Happyher, I agree with your comments. If Godfrey saw it, he'd smile and ask me what I've been up to all these years. Best Wishes.

** Thats True Fishtiger. If people are nice, jobs get done effectively and some staff wouldn't even mind staying behind longer to help the boss out. I'm sure your staff remember you the same way as Godfrey and learnt a lot from you to as you showed them easier ways. Regards.

** I agree psychicdog - we should hang on because the next one might be the exact opposite. A boss from Hell. lol

And you still remember him because he was a good boss. I don't understand why bosses feel the need to me mean and ignorant. I firmly believe that you can get people to do the job you want them to do better being nice than being nasty. Some people are power hungry and I guess they can't help themselves. I was in a position of authority for a few years and I was always nice to the people below me, always used to say hey I know a quicker way or an easier way and they always responded by doing the job I wanted done. Thanks for a great hub Lady E.

Elena, this is such a nice tribute to a boss that sounds worth emulating. I envy you in this regard--I have worked for a mean-spirited, arrogant self-made millionaire who preaches accountability but practices blame. I have tried to be the type of manager you describe here, on my own lesser level, and I hope I have succeeded on some small level.

It is nice to see the efforts of folks in the workplace that genuinely care get noticed--how appropriate that someone as kind as you would be the one to pay tribute.

      Thanks for sharing this.

      Take care.

** Hi Vladimir. Thanks for your comments. If I enlarge the photo its very blurred. I actually took a photo of "the photo". It was taken in 1995. Sorry. :)

** Hello Ralph - "the power" must have gotten to his head. Its a pity he cost your company Millions which probably had a knock-on effect to staff. I hope he sees this comment too and makes peace with everyone he humiliated. Aaaaawh. Best Wishes.

** Thanks Jai - Your comments are so true. I used to enjoy going to work. The atmosphere between all staff was good and we helped each other. We played pranks on each other too (hope Godfrey isn't reading this comment) while working. Nice to read from another brilliant Boss. Regards.

** True Andromida - I think managing is tough but with the right Qualities, you'll find it easy. I personally couldn't be a Boss as I've found out - you can't please everyone. Thanks for stopping. Your new photo is nice.

** Hello Jdove-miller - You are so right. If people were like him, there'd be less people off on "sick-leave" as they can't face going to work. Nice to read from you.

Godfrey is sure from heaven-seems like an angel. What I learned from my experience is that managing people is really tough, its really difficult to please all the employees.I guess you might be thinking of writing a hub "how to become heavenly boss" :)Thank you very much.

As a former boss, it's nice to be appreciated by the people you worked with. Mutual respect in the workplace promotes productivity, reduces stress and makes it fun to go to work. Sounds like that's the atmosphere Godfrey created Lady E? This brings back good memories, Thanks.

I should write a book or a short piece at least about the many bosses I had, mostly good but some quite bad. One, a vice president, had several nasty habits designed to humiliate his subordinates, e.g., having his secretary call and ask someone to come up to his office, and when they arrived making them stand for what seemed like an eternity in front of his desk while he continued to read some document, pretending he was unaware they were waiting at his request. I can remember clearing my throat loudly to attract his attention and resisting a temptation to turn around and leave. He was an incompetent, overbearing jerk--Al Warren was his name. He made several colossal mistakes which cost the company millions, if not billions. I hope he sees this comment. He was the worst.
