Disclaimer: This is not an attempt to discredit Google Adsense and promote other ad networks over it. This hub simply lists the alternatives which even small publishers can consider for their blogs.

If you write blogs or own a website, chances are that you have heard of Google Adsense. As in the case of many other products, Google has dominated the ad networking market as well.

Due to the huge network of Google users, Adsense has spread to a huge section of bloggers. But that doesn't mean the CTR based model has gained happy responses from the millions of users Adsense caters to. There are a large number of people who seem to be very happy from their Adsense experience, but the left out section doesn't seem to be very content with what Google has offered them with.

This article caters to the latter section, the 'not so happy' Adsense users and all those publishers who want to start earning even when their website has just started off and is undergoing development slowly.

Why an alternative to Google Adsense?

Let's discuss why would one look for an alternative to Adsense. I will mention a few points below based on own experience and what I came to learn from online forums and fellow hubbers.Google's terms and conditions are very strict such that many web publishers cannot use adsense adverts on their sites.

  • Impossible to get approved by Adsense for any small website.
  • Frequent account terminations due to reasons beyond the publisher's control.
  • Account gets disabled if Google finds the content objectionable, but Adsense never tells the publisher what the objectionable content was.
  • Publishers from a few selected countries need to keep the blog running for atleast 6 months, thus it becomes pretty useless for beginners.

Adsense Alternatives :

1. Chitika

Chitika is one of the leading ad networks and is behind only Google Adsense in terms of revenue and number of users. Achieving praise from Yahoo, during the shutdown of the Yahoo Affiliate program, Chitika was referred to all publishers.

Chitika's ads depend on the search query of the visitors. This means the content of the ads will depend on the search done in the search engines.

Apart from the regular ads, Chitika also offers 'premium ads'. These premium ads are based on 'Click Prediction' technology, which drastically increases the chances of the ads being clicked upon.

Chitika uses a CPC (cost per click) model.

  • Minimum payout: $10 (PayPal), $50 (cheque)
  • Payout time: Net 30

2. Bidvertiser

Bidvertiser is an excellent alternative to Google Adsense. They offer a lot of interesting ad formats including what they publicize as 'free design'. You can specify the kind of design you want to choose for your text ads. This may have a disadvantage in the fact that such optimization can lead to reduced CPM and CPC. This is because most advertisers want to keep control of their ads and are reluctant to relieve such control to the publishers.

All the standard ad formats exist, however, and the payouts are excellent. Pop-under ads and XML feeds are also supported.

  • Minimum Payout : 50$ (paypal) or 100$ (wire transfer or cheque)
  • Payout Time: NET 30

3. Infolinks

Infolinks specializes in In-Text Advertizing. It doesn't insert ads into the webpages in the standard manner. It indexes the site and inserts links into the content and converts it into advertising links. If you hover your mouse over these links, the Infolinks ad appears, if anyone clicks on those links, you get paid. This method of advertising is quite effective and efficient too. Moreover, Infolinks can be used in addition to other ad network campaigns like Bidvertiser, Chitika etc.

In-Text advertizing is also useful if you have a site under construction. People then think these Infolinks ads are part of your site, click on them and you get paid.

The best feature of infolinks is its quick and easy setup and its highly content relevant in text ads.

  • Minimum Payout: 50$ (paypal) or 400$(wire)
  • Payout Time: NET 30

4. Clicksor

Clicksor is one of the current leaders of the small publisher Adsense competition.Though it targets mainly the small publishers, the cost per click bid values are high enough that you can earn a decent income even if you have a small website. They are also much more tolerant than Google Adsense.

Clicksor also has a big advantage over a number of the lower ranked alternatives on this site in that their ads are truly context sensitive.Even though you can also provide keywords to boost up your search, Clicksor provides technology which shows up context based ads on your sites.

Thus your visitors are exposed to ads of the same subject as the content of your site, which maximises the chances of your ads being clicked upon.

They offer a huge range of ads which includes Text Links,Image Ads,Flash Ads,Animation Ads,Banners,Pop unders,Interstitial Ads and Dynamic (DHTML) highlighting.

  • Minimum Payout: 20$ (paypal) or 50$ (wire)
  • Payout Time: NET 15

5. Kontera

Kontera uses the in-text advertising model. In a summary, these ads are analogous to Infolinks ads. They analyze your site’s content and turn relevant keywords or phrases into hyperlinked text ad.

Kontera is based on a CPC model, in another words publishers get paid when visitors click on the ads. Thus, they offer no CPM(Cost Per Impression). You can select the cost and font of the hyperlinks, density of text links and even specify the keyword to be displayed as text ad.

  • Minimum Payout: 50 $ (Wire, paypal or cheque)
  • Payout Time: NET 30

I've explored quite a lot of alternatives, no one gets even close to Adsense, so be sure to follow all their policies.

If you can't use Adsense, the lesser know alternatives proved to be the best, but keep an eye on them since they are very new in the market.

I almost reached the money I got with Google by combining hotwords for intext www.veente.com for display.

Chitika is completely reliable, as I have come to know from many hubbers and have myself started using it recently.

The payment you get from any ad network depends completely on the program you are enrolled in, the CTR, CPC, CPM if any. There are thousands of factors which determine which ad program suits you.

My personal opinion, both have their advantages and disadvantages, doesn't mean either of them is not reliable.

      :)
