I'd like to shed some light on Mary Kay, the woman, Mary Kay, the company, why I decided to become a Mary Kay consultant, and reasons that may be appealing to you to become a Mary Kay consultant.

My Reason for Becoming a Mary Kay Consultant
My Mary Kay journey has two parts--the part where I didn't really try to the current part. The first time I joined Mary Kay, I was eighteen years old. I was a freshman in college and I'd just made a down payment on a very nice Isuzu Rodeo. I was working as a waitress at the Waffle House and I figured that Mary Kay would be a good way to bring in a little bit of extra money for gas or hanging out with my friends. I'd always had an entrepreneurial spirit--I started my first business around the age of 10 when I started taking candy bars to school and selling them to my peers. I figured that I could easily sell Mary Kay. My first mistake was treating my Mary Kay business like an Avon business. In Avon, you are simply selling beauty products to customers. Mary Kay is so much more than that, but I was young and didn't want to take the time to learn the business side. Needless to say, my business flopped and I quickly lost interest.
Now fast-forward into the future. I was 26 years old--working in New York as an actress. I was flat broke, sometimes not even knowing where my next meal would come from. I knew I needed a change. I didn't have a college degree because I had quit college and I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a regular 9 to 5 job. I wanted something more. I rejoined Mary Kay in an effort to change my life around. I was determined to make it work.
Some women join Mary Kay and within a few months, they've moved up the ladder to success. My sales director had earned her very first Mary Kay car in something like fourteen months. My national sales director had earned hers in something like nine months. Unfortunately, for me, I still was not realizing the full potential of Mary Kay. I was making sales, however, and at that time, it was good enough for me. I'll fast forward a bit more so I won't bore you with minor details.
At the age of 29, the Mary Kay reality finally hit me. I was at an all time low as far as jobs were concerned. I had started going to college again, and I needed a part time job. I found myself at Burger King, learning the drive thru window, taking orders from some guy who thought he was prime management material because he'd spent the last ten years of his life working his way up from the fry station. I knew that I didn't want to spend my life working for someone else. I was so fed up with working at places for little to no money. I was tired of being on my feet all day doing manual labor. I was sick of people telling me when I could take a break, when I could go home, and when I could spend time with my family. I was tired of listening to an unskilled, uneducated man with no class constantly tell me to promote the latest smoothie. Although I had re-enrolled in college, I knew that when I graduated and found a job, I'd still have the same issues--someone else controlling my life. I am now married and my husband and I want to start a family. I don't want someone else telling me how much time I can or can't spend with my children. I don't want to tell my children that I can't come to their sports game, or come see their school play because I have to work. I don't want to have to miss another family cookout because I have to work.
I started attending Mary Kay meetings and soaking up all the knowledge that I could on how to make my business successful. I started realizing the potential that was in front of me--the ability to make six figures while still having all the freedom and flexibility that I wanted. I used to go put in eight hours a day on some crappy job--why not put in those eight hours (or even just half of that) towards my own business? That's when I knew that Mary Kay was the perfect opportunity for me and I decided to put my all into it. I'm still working on my college degree, but it is nice knowing that my degree is simply a back up plan to my business. Here I am a year later with a strong customer base and a strong team! I am on my way to becoming a sales director and earning my very first Mary Kay car.

If you are looking for something more then Mary Kay is a great opportunity for you. It doesn't matter what job you have, what education level you are at, or if you've ever had any sales experience. My sales director has earned a Master's degree and she is making more money with her Mary Kay business than she ever did with any of her jobs. The same is true for my National Sales Director. I represent the other end of the spectrum--no degree yet but I am still being successful.
Mary Kay is great because there are no quotas or territories. You can sell as much or as little as you want, anytime you want and anywhere you want. The Starter Kit Compared to Other Home Based Businesses
There was a picture of the starter kit at the very top of the article. The starter kit comes with everything that you need to launch your business. The best part is that the starter kit only costs you $100 plus shipping and tax. This is a very low fee compared to other home-based business companies.
I tried SMC before (now known as SLC)--that company who used the actor Tom Bosely (best known for his role on Happy Days) for their commercials. It cost me over $300 to join SMC and I didn't even get any products to get started and my average profit was from 20-35%. They also have very expensive shipping and handling fees that can be up to 17% of your inventory order! (Mary Kay charges consultants only $9.25 no matter how big your order is).Their products were very low quality and if I wanted catalogs to give out to my customers, it cost me $3.50 per catalog!
There is a home based business called Stella and Dot where you can host jewelry trunk shows. I was actually very appalled at their marketing plan. They have three starter kits, with the lowest being $199. You don't get any products for this, just some apps and catalogs. You do get around $450 in what they call "sample credits" which has to be used on your first order and has to be placed withing the first seven days of joining. The sample credits is basically $450 in free products (really $250 since you paid $200 for the starter kit), but here is the kicker--they charge you FULL PRICE for the products you use the sample credits on, so when you sell them, you aren't really making any money. After you use your sample credits, you get your products at 50% off for the first 30 days. This means that you make a 50% commission for the first 30 days. After that, you drop down to only a 25% commission (Yes, I was speechless also after the customer service agent explained this to me).
I could give more examples, but I think these two are enough to show the benefits of Mary Kay as a home based business.
