Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is really a tricky task. If you are a webmaster, you can agree with me that it is quite challenging to improve the Google ranking of a website.

Due to the large amount of content on the internet, search engines have developed algorithms to rank pages by subject and relevance.

For example, Google has algorithms such as Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird, that improve pagerank of valuable content and penalize pages with low quality content.

Want to increase Google ranking for your website and get its content in the top search engine result pages (SERPs)? Well, there is no shortcut to this! You must identify the right SEO techniques and tricks to ensure your website appears top in the major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.

But that said, the optimization task is not a rocket science! Using some little wit and effort could bring a noticeable impact on your website. It can improve its user experience and performance in organic search results. See the best SEO tips for improving Google ranking for your website in 2017.

(I have used these SERP techniques on my blogs and the results are just amazing)

In brief, which are the best SEO tips for improving Google ranking in 2017? Well, they include:

1. Identify the right keywords and keyphrases.

2. Create quality content and do on-page optimization.

3. Tap the SEO benefits of social media.

4. Get enough and quality backlinks.

1. Identify the Right Keywords and Keyphrases

Identifying the right keywords and keyphrases for your niche is a very crucial task and a great starting point for SEO. The best keywords and keyphrases to use in your text are the ones that you think are being used by your potential readers to search for information online.

So how do you find the right keywords to rank higher in Google? Well, make use of keyword research. This process involves selecting and analyzing a few terms that you think people will use to look for your content on search engines. According to webmasters, keyword research is one of the best techniques to improve your site visibility on the web.

Google and other search engines use search queries to analyze your text for keyword density, and if they find the keywords are used correctly, they present your content to the readers.

It is important to include secondary and tertiary keywords and key phrases in your content. These are the alternatives to your main/primary keyterm or keyphrase. Remember, not all people will use your main keyterm or keyphrase to search for your content. Some may use these alternatives instead. So if you use them and in the correct way, you increase the chances of your content being found by many internet users.

I don't think if there is any other guide that discusses keyword better that this one. I'm happy to have found it! I encourage you to have it & make use of it!

Let the keyterm appear in the URL, title, H1 & H2 and within the body of the page. Search engines examine the number of times a keyterm appears on a page, and how it links to the rest of the content, to rank the page.

Note, you should never stuff your page with keywords to avoid it being categorized as a webspam and consequently getting penalized (its rank lowered).

2. Create Quality Content and Do On-Page Optimization

This tip is designed to make your pages appear highly relevant to the search engines. In this section, I will touch on the title, URL, summary and body copy.

On-page optimization includes other parameters such as keywords and link building, but these have been covered in other sections of this article.

- Title

You should choose a title that accurately describes the content topic of your page. If you have several pages on your website, you should have a title with unique keywords for each one.

Let the title be short but informative. For better search engine result pages, don’t stuff the title with unnecessary keywords.

It is important to create search engine friendly URLs with words that are relevant to your content. Create a directory structure that makes it easy for your readers to navigate the site.

Make sure that the directory structure indicates the content type found at the URL. Search engines crawl URLs, so make them pleasing to the engines. Short URLs with the right keyterms are highly recommended.

- Summary

In most cases, a summary of a text appears in the search results alongside the title. You should therefore make it informative and interesting. Let the summary relate well to the content.

Be able to tell what the page is all about in the summary. If you have several pages on your site, create unique descriptions for each one.

- Body Copy

Readers enjoy well written and easy-to-read content. You should therefore create a copy that is free from spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Let your content be new, unique and well organized. Documents with more than 500 words are ranked top by search engines than the ones with less than this word count.

If you decide to include anchor text, meta descriptions or internal links in your content, let them be descriptive, concise and relevant.

Include body tags (headings), such as H1, H2 & H3, to improve the readability of your text. Ensure you put keywords in the tags, especially the H1 and H2.

Make use of meta tags at the botton your page. These tags should include relevant keyterms and can feature the title and anchor text.

If your text features images and videos, ensure you include alternative text (ALT text) and brief filenames & descriptions.

And if you are using Adlinks on your page, try to moderate them.

3. Tap the SEO Benefits of Social Media

It has been determined that web pages with a large number of social signals appear in the top positions on search engine searches.

Social signals here refer to Tweets, Pinterest, Facebook likes, comments & shares and Google +1.

Pages with many Facebook signals have been getting top search result rankings since the introduction of the online social media, but Google+ signals are likely to overtake Facebook signals very soon.

Studies show pages that rank in the top position on Google have over 2500 Facebook signals, 300 Twitter signals, 80 Pinterest signals or 150 Google+ signals.

This shows how social media is such an important SEO technique. You can easily integrate your website with different social networks. Most website design platforms offer simple and quick ways to include social media links on your pages.

4. Get Enough and Quality Backlinks

Backlinks indicate how your content is relevant and useful. They are some of the most important SEO techniques for getting your website ranked top by Google and other search engines.

The SEO effect brought to your page by backlinks is determined by the number and quality of backlinks.

The number of backlinks is an important factor. Websites with over 12,000 backlinks have been studied to have higher rankings than the ones with less than 1,000 backlinks.

The links are more relevant if they come from websites with content that relates well to your content.

Quality backlinks have keywords, stopwords, anchor texts or the "no follow" feature. Pages that have backlinks with a keyword are ranked better than pages that have backlinks with either a stopword, anchor text or "no follow" feature.

Backlinks from the same country as your website are also considered quality.

Backlinks from website URLs with high SEO visibility are more valuable than backlinks from website URLs with low visibility. This is bacause websites with high visibility usually generate high traffic. Tip: Backlinks from Wikipedia URLs are not that important today.

In addition to social media, other off-page SEO techniques you can use to improve your website ranking include:

  • Blogging
  • Forum Posting
  • Search Engine Submission
  • Directory Submission
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Link Exchange
  • Link Baiting

In Conclusion...

Get your website ranked top by Google and other search engines by implementing all these tips, techniques and tricks.

Remember, one technique is not enough to improve Google ranking on your website. You may have to combine a number of techniques.

Your page ranking will be slightly determined by factors such as site speed, website promotion, mobilephone site version and webmaster tools like Sitemaps and crawlers.
