BILL Gates was born on October 28, 1955 to the couple William H. Gates II- a Seattle lawyer and Mary Gates- a schoolteacher who is now dead. He and 2 sisters- Kristianne and Libby- grew up in Seattle, Washington where he was born. By fate- he was born in the same year with Angus Young, Shigeru Miyamoto and Rowan Atkinson. Born in England and raised in Canada- Angus young is one of the best guitarists the world has ever produced- Miyamoto is a Jap video game designer and producer at Nintendo while Atkinson is a British comedian, actor and writer popularly known as "Mr. Bean".
Bill Gates first attended school in a public elementary school. Then he transferred to a private school called Lakeside School- a school for the intellectually gifted. There- he discovered his interest in software and began programming computers at age 13. He enrolled at Harvard College intending to get a pre-law degree- the course his parents want him to pursue- but his mind was focus on something else so he dropped out in 1974 to form Microsoft with Paul Allen his childhood friend. In 1983 Paul Allen left the company for good. Gates effectively and efficiently managed the invention and marketing of the different software such as the MS-DOS operating system, the windows operating interface, the Internet Explorer Browser and a host of other popular computer products Soon he gained momentum and refutation as a fierce competitor and aggressive business savvy.
The rising microsoft stock prices in the 1990s made Gates the world's wealthiest man. In March 2009 Forbes Magazine named Bill Gates the richest man in the world with a fortune estimated at $40 billion. In July of 2008- true to his words- Gates stepped down as chief executive officer from the day-to-day involvement in Microsoft so he could focus his attention on his charitable foundation- the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However- he said he was to remain chairman of the Microsoft board.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- which has donated more than US$24 billion to charity- is geared towards global health issues- particularly the prevention of malaria and AIDS in poor countries. Bill and Melinda's philanthropic efforts were justly recognized when in 2005 the Time magazine named them- together with rock star and activist Bono- its persons of the year.
Bill Gates and Melinda French got married on January 1, 1994. The couple are blessed with 3 children: Jennifer Katharine, Rory John and Phoebe Adele who were born April 26, 1996, May 23, 1999 and Sept. 14, 2002, respectively.
