The Market

Entrepreneurs trying to capitalize on niche community websites and know about Vanilla Forums.

The Details

Every once in awhile a new open-source project catches my eye. In the past couple years, I’ve been watching Vanilla Forums take off.

Vanilla Forums is an open source project that provides forum software to the masses. While it’s certainly in its infancy, it’s by far the most user friendly choice on the market.

With the way Wordpress created an entire market unto itself with commercial theme shops, I’d expect Vanilla forums to do the same thing on a smaller scale with community forum software.

So far, VBulletin dominates the forum market and it’s a fairly expensive paid option.

Vanilla forums is positioned to take off in the near future as the open source alternative to VBulletin. When it does, Vanilla users will need theme designers to take their forums and community sites to the next level.

Currently, there are 5 Vanilla themes are being sold on Themeforest.net. If I was a smart entrepreneur, I’d partner with a good Vanilla Developer and a designer and start working on premium vanilla themes to sell in ThemeForest.

While Vanilla is still getting off the ground, I’d also develop some great free themes as marketing tools for premium themes and custom Vanilla services.
