Civil Engineering and its many Aspects

Updated on November 4, 2015

Civil Engineering is one of the challenging disciplines of engineering and known for dealing with complex and creative structures. Various researches reveal that people with their strong right brain are inclined to creative things and those who are the owners of strong left brain choose technical fields. But, those who have chosen civil engineering are challenging this theory. Probably, civil engineers are gifted with brains that are strong on both sides. Civil engineering involves both technical and creative activities for creating building or structures that facilitate people in multiple ways.

Civil Engineering to Interior Design

If you enjoy the creative part of civil engineering the most, you can enhance your skills in interior designing. You can use your creative talent via interior designing and create fascinating structures. Interior designing is itself a vast field and one has to deal with various aspects to modify inside of a structure that fulfils the need of clients. The best part of interior design is you have numerous opportunities for new structures and for those as well that have already been created.

Importance of Compact Spaces

Life in cities is more about compact yet convenient spaces; interior designing with skills in civil engineering help people get spaces that they need today. The majority of urban population is middle and lower middle class people. Buying the entire space from the root is costly in the cities; buying flats has become the best option for middle and lower class societies. Compact homes facilitates them with spaces that creatively fulfill their housing needs. If we see some of the following images, we can say that spaces created for a specific group of society are the intelligent amalgamation of civil engineering and interior design. Basically, interior designing is more about customization of spaces and civil engineering helps in the similar customization.

Spacious Creativities

If one has enough space, with collective intelligence of civil engineering and interior design, a great structure can be created. The following pictures would help you know more about examples of spacious structures created creatively.

Importance of Architects

Civil engineer alone is nothing; an architecture also plays a great role in creating various structure. More specifically, an architect is a professional who plans the virtual structure that further created by a civil engineer and finally enhanced the aesthetics by an interior designer. The trio of an architect, a civil engineer and an interior designer create a structure livable in every aspect. Their roles are different but the motive is similar - to facilitate people with ideal infrastructure and living spaces.

The Role of AutoCAD

Planning any infrastructure or structural design is majorly influenced by the blueprints and sketches. To know how the structure would look, AutoCAD is one of the best options that helps creating a graphical representation to know how the structure is going to be. AutoCAD is a software used to create 3D designs of infrastructural projects. The software helps modify, analyse and optimise the design. The 3D designs are used to calculate how the structures would look after the construction.

Types of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is not about a single responsibility; there are multiple responsibilities. One cannot handle such a vast field. That is why, this field is divided in various branches so that individuals can deal with a specific field and achieve successful outcomes. Following are the branches of civil engineering, please have a look:

Structural Engineering

This branch deals with the structural analysis and design of different structures. Structural engineer is responsible for analyzing and designing structures that promises safety. The design must satisfy the project specifications. On the other hand, it must meet all safety regulations. The structure must endure climate changes and natural disasters.

This form of civil engineering handles the surveying and leveling of land by using different instruments. This is done to locate and measure buildings, bridges, channels, highways, and pipelines for constructions. Surveyors are generally classified into two categories: geodetic survey or plane surveyor.

Construction Engineering

This branch of civil engineering deals with the planning, construction and maintenance of different kinds of structures. It is the planning and execution of designs from site transportation, environmental, development and structural engineers. They must ensure the plans designed by other engineers are implemented to their exact specifications. Construction engineers supervise field work during the entire project. They work like managers and oversee the project from start to finish. They look after the problems that come up during the course of the project.

Environmental Engineering

It involves study of environment friendly designs, sewage management, pollution and their resolutions. Sewage management and handling environmental issues are two basic aspects of environmental engineering.

Transportation Engineering

Transportation engineering is all about planning, construction and management of transportation facilities. Transportation engineers design and implement the transportation infrastructures in order to provide a comfortable, economical, safe, convenient and environmentally compatible mode of transport. This branch of civil engineering comprises of six divisions:

  • Highway

  • Air Transportation

  • Coastal & Ocean

  • Urban Transportation

  • Waterway

  • Aerospace

Municipal Engineering

These engineers will work with urban or city governments on the planning and management of the township. Most of these engineers work directly with government officials to ensure that the structures within the municipality are properly designed and implemented.

Water Resource Engineering

Water Resources Engineers deal with the design and construction of hydraulic structures. They deal with canals, dams and water different water bodies and distribution system. The engineer is responsible for the design, implementation and safety precautions while dealing with hydraulic structures.

Geotechnical Engineering

This branch of civil engineering comprises of studies of soil, foundations and bearing capacities. The geotechnical engineer studies the behavior of the earth materials. This branch is a crucial part of civil engineering to know how will the earth affect a structure that is to be constructed at a particular location. On the other hand, they evaluate pre-existing structures to ensure if there is any problem associated with earth materials near or under the structure.

Material Engineering

Material engineering is all about the study of properties of materials used in construction, material strength and ceramics. They determine high-quality materials to be used for a project with specific requirements.

Earthquake Engineering

Earthquake engineers deal with the earthquake resistant structures and seismic forces. They actively work to ensure the seismic regions so that they can better deal with construction that can resist earthquakes.

Coastal Engineering

Coastal engineering is all about coastal and marine structures. These structures comprises of embankments and groynes. They ensure that the structures being erected correctly. On the other hand, they are also concerned about not to disturb the coastal regions.

Tunnel Engineering

Tunnel engineers specialize in tunnel engineering. They are responsible for the planning, designing, construction, safety and maintenance of tunnels. There are certain guidelines that must be adhered by tunnel engineers.

If you are a civil engineer, you are already dealing with creative and technical aspects of infrastructural construction. But, to take your profession one step ahead, you should consider doing a short term course in interior designing or you can choose a specific field in civil engineering.
