The Future of Intermodal
Fifty percent of workforce is going to retire in the next ten years. Because of this, the management trainee program was established to bring in to bring a continuous flow of talented leaders into the company. The program is targeted towards recent college graduates; in fact one of the requirements is a four year degree with a preference for logistics. The program builds the management trainees into strong leaders with an emphasis on railroad management and railroad safety. They are then moved into various departments inside the corporation in coordination with their skills and interests.
CSX has worked towards reducing the amount of fuel it takes to maintain operations. This green movement is very attractive to younger employees. Currently it can move a ton of freight 468 miles on a single gallon of fuel. It also touts the fact that using rail operations, one intermodal train takes 280 trucks off the highway. This frees up the space on the interstates for private citizens use and lowers the wear and tear on the roadways.
