Computer Certification in the IT Industry – Why Getting Certified is Important?

Would you ride a vehicle knowing the driver has no license? Certainly not. The same concept applies to an IT certification. However, some would argue that certification isn’t really important because it doesn’t guarantee that the person knows how to do the job.

Others would say it provides a standard of what should be expected of an IT professional. It is still a matter of debate until now. Even so, here are some reasons why IT certification can provide you an edge in the industry.

Building an Identity

IT certifications build the “identity” of a person in terms of his technical knowledge and skills. Although it doesn’t guarantee that someone can actually do the job, certifications still provide the employers the “technical perspective” in a person that is supportive of field experience. It also builds the image of a candidate, especially with a high-level certification.

Content Mastery

Though certifications are not a measure of content mastery, any new technician who got a passing score means that he is willing to learn and be trained. Candidates with low level certifications are more likely to take training and develop their skills from the higher ups.

Hiring and Promotion

Having certifications may just be the ladder for yours to climb up from the piles of resume and be noticed by employers. In addition, an employee with certifications has a higher chance of winning in the competition of promotion.

Boosting Confidence

Certifications are very much like medals although it can’t be worn. In the fast-growing industry of information technology, nothing beats a certification in making you feel confident even as a newbie. It may not prove that someone can actually do what his certification says. Nonetheless, learning knowledge and skills, being tested on them and actually passing for a certification can certainly boost self-esteem and self-fulfillment.

As the industry change, so are the certifications. Certifications always give opportunities to learn more as they necessitate familiarity with the content.

In addition, certifications may open the door for a promotion as what have been said earlier. Promotions provide a professional the chance to develop himself or else he won’t stay in his position.

Company Image

Companies like IT need to market themselves and one way to do so is to show off their credentials. You choose a lawyer, doctor, or financial advisor because of their licenses and credentials. Certifications are excellent tool for boosting a company’s image on marketing material or even for securing projects.


It isn’t always ideal or professional to learn hands-on. Certifications don’t teach all the ins and outs of the industry and it’s still true that experience is one of the best teachers – but having certifications give you the knowledge to make educated and appropriate decisions. Keep in mind that your client is hiring and trusting you because you are the professional. Trust is very important in any relationship.

Now, should you get a certification? Yes. Will it be worth it? Definitely. In an era where education is one and experience, second, you should definitely invest your time, money, and energy into acquiring certifications. It doesn’t matter if you are the employee or the employer. Certifications provide a lot of benefits for both. So grab your laptop because you can now get courses and online certification, you don’t even have to leave your home.

      Good idea! I has an IT crash course in preparation for a specific assignment. Certification would have prepared me more effectively.
