The cover letter is the first thing an employer sees. Make yours reflect your personality!

When searching for a job, the cover letter is often the first thing an employer will see. You want to make a strong impression without seeming desperate, although you may very well be just this. This can be accomplished by following this simple format and demonstrating strong grammar and spelling skills, or at least the skill to utilize your grammar and spell check options on your word processing program.

Cover Letter Format

A cover letter should be formatted like a business letter. Your full address, telephone number and email address should appear at the top of the page. Leave and space and enter the date. Leave a space and enter your contact's name, title, organization and full address followed by a greeting. If you do not have a contact name address your query to the hiring agent in the human resources department. Use the greeting, "To Whom it May Concern:"

Mrs. Hammer
Human Resources Director
National Bank of the Nation
1 Main Ave.
Shreveport, LA 71101

Dear Mrs. Hammer:

This first paragraph should be used to explain which position you are applying for and how you heard about the organization. You can also offer some very basic information about who you are but keep it short and simple.

In the body of your cover letter you should inform the employer what you are currently doing and how this skill set would help fill their needs. You want to demonstrate that you have an understanding of what the company needs. This is also a place to expand upon interesting points in your resume and make reference to the fact that your resume is enclosed.

To wrap up your letter you should request an interview and state that you will follow-up with your submission. You can let them know that you will be in town available for an interview on a certain day or you can let them know that you will be calling in a week to follow-up.

Human Resources
Hiring Manager
Christus Schumpert Hospital
1 Main Ave.
Shreveport, LA 71101

To Whom is May Concern:

I am writing to express my interest in working as an RN at Christus Schumpert Hospital. I will be graduating in May with my B.S.N. from the University of Louisiana. Ideally, I would like to work with geriatric patients but would be open to considering any available staff positions currently available. I have open availability and am willing to work overnight, holidays and weekends as needed.

You will see in my enclosed resume that I have been employed at Golden Oaks Retirement Homes as a CNA for the last five years. This experience gave me the opportunity to improve my nursing skills and has given me a broad knowledge base for dealing with geriatric patients. However, through my studies, I have also had the opportunity to take classes in the areas of oncology and orthopedics giving me a wide spectrum of interests and abilities that allows me to offer patients the kind of knowledge and expertise required to give patients that feeling of security they need during a hospital stay.

Outside of my nursing abilities I have also taken many leadership courses which gives me the ability to effectively lead a nursing team. As a leader I encourage professionalism while keeping a humorous outlook that helps my team get through the rough times. This leads to well run teams that reflect positively on Christus Schumpert Hospital.

I hope for the opportunity to start my career at Christus Schumpert Hospital. I will call the week of December 3 to see about the possibility of arranging an interview. Please feel free to contact me anytime by calling (318)55-6594 or by email at: I look forward to speaking with you soon.
