Harassment Comes in Many Forms

Harassment in the workplace can be sexual harassment, racial slurs, physical or mental abuse. There are also many other actions that make someone uncomfortable while at their place of employment.

The most common types of harassment and discrimination are to do with: age, race, sex, and gender. Sometimes, unfortunately, upper management may threaten your job or offer a promotion in exchange for favors. Always report this type of harassment at once. Talking to a person that is in a higher position than the one that is doing the harassing may be the appropriate action in order for you feel anything is being done to resolve the issue. The color of a person's skin, their age or whether their male or female should never be a factor in whether a human is hired or promoted at a job. Sexual harassment should be dealt with by firing the associate if it is proven.

Harassment should never be tolerated for any reason. If a person is allowed to get away with harassing another then their behavior will likely continue and get worse. Always take care of gross misconduct as soon as it becomes apparent because, it will only weaken your case if you let it linger. It will also effect your reputation as a manager if you continue to let the behavior continue and you could lose your job. There are laws in place against such behavior and it will not be tolerated.

Pray or Mediate on It

Do not act in haste. Make sure you were truly harassed. Think hard about what happened and decide the route you want to take. Then stand behind your decision to the very end. If it was an honest mistake or something small maybe it can be forgiven but, certain issues have to be addressed. In appropriate touching or comments are not for the work place.

Think hard before making decisions because, once the allegations are made they can't be taken back. If the accused shows no remorse then he has to be held accountable for sure. Forgiving is one thing but, forgetting is another thing entirely. Sometimes getting counseling will help ease the mental pain that comes with being picked on or harassed.

Harassment Can Come in Many Forms

Harassment can come in many forms including sexual, religious and age discrimination. Always stand up for your rights and never settle for less than what is right.

Confront The Perpetrator

Get the associate alone and confront him or her about what happened earlier. Sometimes you have to get it off your chest and expose the person for what he or she has done. Instead of confronting the perpetrator you may want to tell a manager and avoid the perpetrator if you fear they will hurt you, for example. On the other hand, never let a fellow employee get away with harassment. The individual should know that they cannot act in an unprofessional manner at work.

If the act was an actual criminal act call the police. They are available to serve and protect. No one should have to worry about anything at work except for just simply doing your job. Never fear being retaliated against especially when you are an innocent party in the matter.

Stop All Harassment

Stop all harassment at your place of employment before it gets out of hand. Go as high up the ranks you have to when trying to stop discrimination or harassment.

Talk To Management

You also have no choice but, to go to a supervisor and tell them what happened. Always go to upper management as high as necessary when dealing with discrimination or harassment. In some cases the supervisor may have been the guilty party. In that situation go over their head to the higher company boss. You need to have your facts straight when making strong accusations against someone. If you have video evidence then the person being accused can't say it wasn't them.

If you have ever experienced any type of harassment while at your place of employment and want to share your thoughts, please do so in the comments capsule located at the bottom of this page. Sometimes, sharing your bad memories will help you to overcome them and get past them.

Reserve a Lawyer

In some cases, you may have the company that you work for against you or they seem to be doing nothing about your allegations. When this happens it's time to get an attorney to handle the situation. An experienced and knowledgeable representative to fight for your rights will ensure that any morally wrong problems occurring at your place of employment is eradicated quickly. The law is always on your side so never keep these harassment's a secret because you do not want it to continue or it might happen to someone else.

If a crime or serious form of harassment occurred, you may want to reserve a lawyer to fight for the removal of the employee or even to have them charged in some cases. It may come to the point that you feel a restraining order is needed obtained then make sure the order is followed to a T. It seems drastic but, an attorney knows your rights and will not let the victim get taken advantage of.

Final Comments

Never let a bully pick on you. Always, stand up for yourself and you will feel better because of it. If your being discriminated against or harassed then it should be reported instantly. Never tolerate gross misconduct and any other unethical and harassing situations should be nipped in the bud, then and there.

I am not advocating calling police every time you have problems or filing lawsuits all the time but, as long as you are doing your job correctly then you should be left alone and more importantly, an associate should always feel safe and comfortable when performing work functions especially when on the clock or on work grounds. I sincerely hope that you never have to go through any type of abuse at work but, if it happens then set the person straight right away.

It may be hard but always go over the employees head to management and/or the law if you have no choice. If the supervisor is at fault then you need to go to the district or even the corporate office to handle major problems that hinder your work or cause undue stress and drama.

Verbal Abuse is Harassment

Harassment should never be tolerated at work or in private. If it happens report it as soon as possible to a member of management or other higher personnel.

Great article here. I have been retired for a year but still could relate to this stuff. I think that people like this can carry their attitudes over into their personal lives and then inflict that same abuse on their family. I have a very abusive daughter who was reprimanded at work for verbally a abusing her coworkers and she does the same thing to her family. It is very sad for everyone concerned.
