Does Anyone Actually Like Their Boss?

Updated on July 17, 2011

Does Anyone Actually Like Their Boss?

So that is the question, everyone probably has had a bad boss, or a mean boss at one point or another in their life and can probably relate and remember how that made them feel. There is nothing worse than having a boss that is always out to get you or that doesn’t appreciate your hard work, or worse yet, a boss who sabotages everything you do and even takes credit for things that they had nothing to do with. These kinds of bosses can make your life miserable, believe me I know because I have had several terrible bosses, and I have to say that through all my work history, most of my bosses have been female however, I have had a few male bosses, and truth be told, women seem to be harder on others than men (at least in my experience). So by now you are probably thinking that this hub is about mean bosses, but actually it’s the opposite. This hub is dedicated to my awesome boss, who is not terrible at all, and is probably the best boss I have ever had hands down.

What are the advantages of having a great boss? Wow let me count the ways, well for one thing it is actually a pleasure to go to work everyday and there isn’t that old familiar dread that some people feel when they have a horrible boss, but they know they have to go to work, there is little to no stress when you have a cool boss. And when you like your boss you seem to try to go out of your way to please them, or to make sure that you do not let them down in anyway. Since my boss is the kind of person that really thinks about others before herself, she goes out of her way to make everyone happy as far as their schedules and needed time off, I think that because of this she is well respected and rightly so. My boss subscribes to the old adage that if you keep your employees happy, then they will work their best for you. I believe this whole heartily and know it to be true.

The Interview

The day that I met my boss Heather, I came into the workplace for my interview. As soon as Heather walked up to me and extended her hand to me, she said, “Hello, my name is Heather”, I was completely mesmerized by her in a very nonlesbianistic sort of way, (I know nonlesbianistic is probably not a word but I sometimes make up words as I go along to suit my needs). So the interview went well and Heather and I had a nice long chat and for some reason, I kind of knew that I was going to get the job because Heather and I seemed to have this unspoken understanding between us and we hit it off perfectly, as if we were made for each other. I never experienced such a perfect chemistry with a boss before ever in my life. I knew that although Heather looked very different than most of my other bosses because she has this unique look to her. She wears her hair in this 50’s type hairstyle and not dorkish 50’s but very cool 50’s bordering on into the 60’s look if you know what I mean? As a matter of fact as I sat there listening to the advantages of working for Heather, a random thought hit me that almost made me laugh out loud, it occurred to me that Heather reminded me of one of the girls from the group The B-52’s, and at one point I even pictured her breaking out into the Love Shack song, Heather and I were definitely sympatico (To share a mental connection or bond with someone, or to have a lot in common with someone) Ergo,I knew it was a match made in heaven.

The many hairstyles of Heather

As fun as my interview was little did I know that it was just the beginning of many happy and fun filled days of working with Heather. First of all, Heather has a sense of humor like no other. Also, anyone that knows me, knows all about my sense of humor and at times very dry sense of humor at that. Heather understands this very well and we play off each other like Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Lucy and Ethel, well you get the picture. Heather and I can make each other laugh so much we almost piss ourselves daily. Yes we work hard at our jobs and we do our jobs well, but there’s nothing wrong with having fun while you work.

Working in the field that we work in leaves plenty of room for poking fun at others and although we try our hardest not to make fun of someone, sometimes it is as inevitable as the sun coming up each morning. We work in the beauty industry and sometimes it is impossible to make someone beautiful or even pretty. We do our best however to give people the best advice on how to beautify themselves but the occasional woman in her mid thirties with a Sam Elliott mustache will get us going every time. When such a moment happens at work, I can tell that Heather tries her best to not look in my direction because the slightest smirk of my lip would set her off into a spiral cackle of which it would be hard to recover from. And the same goes for me, we are very sympatico that way.

Don’t get me wrong, there are days that feel like I have delved into the very pit of hell having to deal with the public. Bitches and banshies love to make our day miserable and they can definitely try our patience. The usual screaming kids breaking nail polish all over our beautiful, pristine floor that we all take such pride in, can wreck havoc on everyone involved, but we handle it and go on with our day. That is one of the things that I admire about my boss, she can handle the most uncomfortable situation and not even break a sweat, or bat an eyelash or have a hair out of place in that teased to high heaven coif of hers….she makes it look so easy, she’s awesome!

So whether you like your boss or you can't stand them, take a minute to think about what it is like to be in their shoes and it just might make you appreciate your boss all the more. I have been the boss several times in my cosmetologist career and it really isn't all it's cracked up to be, there is so much responsiblity and not enough compensation. Of course being a good boss takes a lot of time and patience and of course understanding and tolerance of others. You have to be a good listener and not only a boss but a friend in times of trouble. Not everyone can be a good boss as it takes a lot of experience and communication skills. I know that not every boss can be like Heather and I guess that just makes me lucky and I can forgive her for being 10 years younger than me and for making more money....Cheers!

Great Hub. I have had a few retail business of my own and my motto was "Always lead by example" treat your employees the way you would want to be treated as an employee and they will move mountains to do a great job for you and your company.

I loved the hairstyles, brings back a few memories of the girlfriends I had many years ago. Also remember waiting and crossing my legs when any of my 5 sisters took over the bathroom to primp up, tease and spray their beehives to death.

I had to use a gas mask to prevent suffocating from the hairspray fumes they left behind:0) God bless their cotton picking hearts. Rated UP and awesome.

I've had a lot of bosses but not one with so many hair styles and looks...leave it to a woman to reinvent herself daily! LOL! You have found that great place to be in the working stiff have found "buy in" which was actually probably motivated by Heather. It's part of the contract that is not stated but agreed upon in silence that says, "I'll be a good boss if you will be a good employee". Not everyone can deal with such a contract because far too many are looking to the boss and misreading good will as an opportunity for them to be a "buy in". Glad that this has worked out for you in these times. Thanks for sharing. WB

How lucky you are to have such a great boss. Unfortunately not everyone does. It seems as though with some of them they get an inflated sense of their own importance the minute the do become a boss. I am lucky also. I have a great boss.

Ladyjane1....I loved this hub. I like your writing style. Bosses.....please, don't get me started! I've had some of the worst in the world....Which is WHY, I'm sure, when I became a Boss myself, I vowed to be an awesome Boss if it killed me. And know what? It almost did. Being a "Boss" is not at all glamorous! Voted up & funny.

Not sure I've ever had a boss that cool, but I did have one that I really liked while the job lasted. Most of the bosses in the field I work in were witches on a power trip.

I've had both varieties of bosses. Being in the position of authority and power seems to bring out the worst in some people! But there are those for whom it is a challenge to be fair and to encourage, to mentor and help build their underling's confidence and prepare them to step up and into better positions. It's PEOPLE expressing their own true natures who make that difference between the two polar opposites of bosses' management styles, I think.

Good hub, dear LadyJane! Makes a person think about how we treat others in every relationship of life! Just having the power to wield doesn't give permission to be ugly and take advantage!

you have your original avatar back, away goes Lady Gaga. :) I've usually worked for family members or family friends, which always has an added aspect that is a bit awkward. You are never quite sure how to separate your private life from your work life.

Ok..I have to say you had me at hello. You are also a great employee and I am flattered that you took the time to write about my management style.I am flattered and at a loss for words (and that never happens). I have also in my 21 years of retail been managed by some real battleaxes and that sharpened me and made me who I am today. To lead is the greatest job in the world..why? Because you can create new leaders to take your place and that is the best gift of all! Here is quote I love

"Leaders need to be optimists. Their vision is beyond the present."

    Rudy Giuliani

I base every day on that one quote. Thanks for this Im voting it wayyyyy up!!

Im very happy you all get along so well, she's seems like a cool girl. Voted up again Love ya sis :) ge

Great Hub. I love the "Nonlesbianistic" expression - brilliant! I would like to help validate and consolidate your viewpoint by confirming that although I am not a lesbian, I have nothing whatsoever against lesbians. I still think, however, for the formal record, Heather looks absolutely stunning! :)

I have worked for many managers over the years, both male and female. I remember as a young lad starting out in the world; I was told that the worst thing you could ever have is a female boss. I don't know, I have gone through phases where I thought that to be the case but then I look back to some wonderful female bosses who were absolutely great to me. I think that part of my problem is that I have had too many bosses, in different jobs! :)

My present boss is a great guy. He understands me absolutely, he gives me every day off I ask for, he would never dock my pay and he thinks I'm the best employee he's ever had!

I wonder if you can guess who my present boss is...??? ;)
