Kolkata, India’s scenic ‘City of Joy’, is riding high on a growth curve like others, and is truly emerging from its image of a conservative city to the worldwide appreciated metropolis.

The state government has promoted foreign direct investment, which has mainly come from the field of software and electronics. Known as the major hub for the information technology industry in India, Kolkata witnesses the presence of leading IT companies. Being the only metropolitan city in the Eastern part of the country, Kolkata has attracted the attention of major software and telecom companies throughout India and abroad. Over the last few years, Kolkata has in fact turned into a preferred IT/BPO destination. More & more companies are coming to the city to set up their offices. Various start-up companies, like ITC Infotech, have also come up in the city, and as a result, many professionals are turning to Kolkata in search of a good IT job.

The government has allotted 17 acres to the ITC Infotech for developing a software development center in the city. Also, the IT division of the state would soon sign an MoU with IT giant Microsoft to set up a research and training centre in West Bengal. Also, the British Telecom (BT) has taken 100,000 square feet of space to open a high-end back office work at the DLF building.

The Eastern Region Council of NASSCOM, the leading trade body and chamber of commerce of the IT-BPO industries in India, is also located in the city.

Powered by Reliance, Kolkata has become India's first metro city to have 100% wi-fi connectivity on 4G speed.

Below are some of the snapshots of the growing West Bengal's IT prowess-

  • Wipro who has already set up a sprawling 17 acre campus in Kolkata, is now planning to set up another 50 acre plot in Rajarhat, the other proposed IT hub in the East Kolkata.
  • Tata Consultancy Services is also planning to set up another similar center in the IT park.
  • Even the current companies have formulated their expansion plans.
  • Hinduja TMT has shown interest in setting up a new software development center in Kolkata.

A Knowledge Corridor is being planned to set up in two phases at New Town, Kolkata. Also, plots and prime walk-in infrastructure will be available for leading players here. Furthermore, some of the biggest business names have already booked their spaces in the 200 acres of land allotted for IT & ITes industries. Moreover, the IT Park at Bantala has already received the SEZ status from the Indian government.

To boost the IT growth in the city, 630 acres of land at Jagadishpur will be acquired in developing the 3rd IT hub after Sector-V in Salt Lake and New Town in Rajarhat. The project would be three times the current electronics complex in Salt Lake.

Unprecedented job opportunities in the automobile sector

While Pune, Gurgaon and Chennai have already turned into the automobile manufacturing centers in the west, north and south, now, Kolkata has the potential to become an important auto destination in the Eastern part. Even according to the newspaper reports, Bavaria, the German state which is popularly known as Europe's automobile hub, is now keen to invest in the Bengal's automobile sector. Bavaria is the headquarters of top notch automobile makers, like BMW, Volkswagen and Audi. There are other companies like Siemens, Allianz, Munich Re, Continental, Adidas, Puma, which are also based in Bavaria.

Marut Suzuki, India's leading car maker, has planned to establish an integrated logistics hub, near Kolkata. The new logistics hub will be vested over 60 acres of land, which would be situated near Panagarh. The company has already decided to set up a `80 crore hub at Siliguri to cater to burgeoning demands of customers from the North east region.

Audi has inaugurated its 7th pre-owned luxury car showroom, known as 'Audi Approved: Plus', in the 'City of Joy', i.e, Kolkata. Sprawling over 2300 square feet, this new showroom will have Audi shop, where customers can easily buy a variety of Audi branded merchandise.

Outsourcing destination for engineering products/services

Kolkata is fast developing as the future spot of outsourcing, mainly for core engineering businesses due to various cost benefits, related to services. With the passage of time, it has also earned the tag of outsourcing destination, owing to reasons like availability of talented professionals, low real estate prices and the presence of top education institutes. Moreover, it has one of the fastest growing economy throughout the country and various leading companies in the field of IT, engineering, construction and manufacturing, are opening their offices in Kolkata, as compared to other metro cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai, where there is a high attrition rate. The Rs 100 crore hosiery and textile park in Howrah district, is likely to produce over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs in Kolkata, besides promising state-of-the art training and manufacturing facilities to over 250 small & medium units in the city.
