Extended Definition of a Dentist

Updated on April 14, 2019

What would be the cleanest and important job in the world possession many fields? The answer to this question would be a dentist. Before going too far let’s define the purpose and what is a dentist. A dentist is a doctor who specializes in the cleanliness and well-being of their patient’s teeth. They can perform surgeries, correct teeth. According to the Sonaku “A dentist is a physician whose practice is in the field of dentistry. This involves the mouth, teeth, gums and related areas.” They are the ones who take care of our mouths and keep it healthy.

There are many steps to do to before becoming a dentist. The first step is to complete a bachelor’s degree students need to complete a 90-hour undergraduate program, but if they take a pre-dental program they will be ahead in their studies. The second step is to get a good score on the dental acceptance test. This test is about 5-hours long see even more because it’s composed with many subjects related to the dental field. The subject that are on the test are biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, perceptual ability, reading comprehension, and quantitative reasoning. They each has various question numbers. The third step is to get a doctoral degree.

According to How to become a Dentist “Dental school takes four years to complete at full-time status, so those who complete a bachelor’s degree first will be in school for eight years. Those who do not finish a bachelor’s degree first or who complete a combined bachelor’s and doctoral degree program may take less time to finish their schooling.” Once a dentist graduates and earns a state license, he or she may begin to see patients. Then the students who are in process of being a dentist have to get a license in order to see patients and have their own clinic or work on patients.

The job we define as dentist is too broad because it is composed with several other field in it. There are about six different field in dentistry. According to Clement “Although there are many field in dentistry there are also many career paths to choose between. The first one is a general dentist; they provide general teeth care such as prevention, maintenance, cleaning, fluoride, root canals, and cavity filling. The second one is a cosmetic dentist they specialize in teeth whitening, veneers, and bonding of teeth. The third one is an orthodontist they specialize in the alignment of the jaw, and repositioning crocked or misplaced teeth and provide braces. The fourth type of dentist is a periodontist they take care of the gums and the surrounding tissues of it. And the last one is an oral surgeon they do surgeries to extract impacted teeth.

Dentists are important because they help people have a great smile and a healthy buccal. They provide a great dental health maintenance for their patients and prevent them form having risky procedures. Dentists are helpful because they help asses what could go wrong in the future with your teeth and provide the necessary care that a patient could need.
