Updated on August 14, 2016

Pay for online advertising? not me!!!

Some of the biggest online advertising websites are actually free to use, and are a great tool to get your business an online presence for absolutely free.

Online advertising is fantastic SEO (search engine optimisation) for your business. And if you want your website ranked high, using the methods below will be some of the best free SEO your website can get.

I never pay for online advertising, why would you when there's plenty of places to get yourself seen for absolutely free.

Some of the biggest online advertising websites are actually free to use; and are a great tool to build your businesses online presence at no cost.

Free directory listing websites UK

The following directories are all high quality websites that will carry links back to your website when you create your profiles, thus giving your page authority in the eyes of Google and getting your website ranked higher than websites with the same niche who don't do any SEO.

When we have registered our website with all the search engines, the next step should then be your directory listings. Business directory's help people find what they are looking for. When people want to find a business, often their first stop will be at some of the following.

192.com

You can list your business for free on 192.com. These go instantly live. The Basic free setup allows you to input your website URL, business address, business phone number, and also allows you to add keywords and a description about your business, as well as choosing a category and adding a pic/logo.

Yahoo Local

You can list your business for free on Yahoo Local, they're submitted and managed through a website called Infoserve. This may take up to 8 weeks to get verified and indexed. The Basic free setup allows you to input your website URL, business address, business phone number, and also allows you to add keywords and a description about your business, as well as choosing a category.

Google Places

A Google place listing is a very powerful tool in grabbing those local people searching on Google for businesses in the area. A free business listing at Google Places will again include your business name, business address and phone number, website URL. With Google Places though, you can also add up to ten images and up to five videos, all for free. Google Places requires that you verify your account with a PIN sent at your choice by phone or postcard (usually post card). You will need a Google email.

Thomson Local

You can get a basic free listing with Thomson local, they don't allow you to add much information unless you pay but as said before never pay for advertising, just stick with what you can get free.

Yell/Hibu

You don't get a line entry in your classification in the book anymore, but you will get a listing in the back of the book and also on Yell.com. You may occasionally get a sales call but it's up to you if you choose further advertising.

Yelp

Yelp is a great place to get listed. You can include your business name, business address and phone number, website URL, business logos and as many pictures as you like. You can also get reviewed and have pictures added by other members which can be great, getting family and friends to give your business some great reviews is a must.

The Sun business directory / Scoot

Now this is a relativity new business directory powered by scoot and is fast becoming huge, your business will benefit from better visibility across the Internet, targeted exposure to 3.5 million customer and a comprehensive business profile, so you can turn more browsers into customers. Your free listings on the Sun/Scoot Network can appear on Touchlocal.com, the Independent and Ask Jeeves.

Freeindex

A lot like Yelp, you get a fully customisable page that you can add your information and services on, as well as your URL, pictures and users can add reviews. This site is usually on page 1 of any search for your business and is trusted by Google.

Cylex

This is a pretty new business directory that gains over 1.5 million unique page views p/m and has an impressive page rank currently of 6. This directory will gain a great alexa ranking as all submissions are manually approved thus keeping everything perfectly up to date.

Remember, when creating these profiles, don't be lazy, fill out all the profile fields, add plenty of pictures and get reviews as this will make your profile rank higher internally.

Free Web Index

This is a new business directory that I have noticed always gets indexed. You get a free listing that you can add your website link to, it may take up to four weeks to get listed, and appear in any search results though.

Free classified ads

Classified ads are great tools for your business, I rely on the following websites to improve my websites SEO and sell their products for free as well as advertise services.

Gumtree

Personally I have a few accounts on Gumtree as they delete duplicate content, it's so annoying as Gumtree is the best for free advertising but there is a lot of competition, they delete your newest ads too so it's best to post a new ad then delete the older one yourself. This is the best site to promote your website and products, but you have to pay for a website link.

Friday-ads

This is the most diverse of all free classified ad websites, you can have one account that you can change the contact information on and they aren't to picky about what categories you post in and how many areas. Free website links allowed which is good for your SEO.

Freeads

These are much more flexible, they allow multiple ads in different cities unlike Gumtree, I find it so easy to use Freeads, but you can'#t interchange the contact details so you might need to make separate accounts for separate businesses and personal etc. Free website links allowed which is good for your SEO.

Vivastreet

All free but I only seem to get spammers responding, I do use it occasionally but just for a bit of SEO more than anything.

Deals Are Done

A very new website with a lot of potential, you can add your items like a classifieds website but it has a Groupon type feel to it. Free website links allowed which is good for your SEO.

Using social media websites to your advantage

Your business should already be on the social media bandwagon, but if it isn't then you need to jump right on...

There are so many social media websites out there and you probably don't have the time to use them all, so you should really do some research when it comes to your businesses niche.

These types of public profiles are not only good for SEO But you can also advertise and sell your products through most.

The most popular...

Facebook - Now being the second largest website on the internet, only to Google you would b a fool to miss out on the potential Facebook has for your business. Millions of people use Facebook daily to Socialise. Business owners are rightly taking advantage of the marketing opportunities that it brings. There is a more comprehensive guide about Facebook marketing here.

Twitter - Twitter accounts are great for SEO as Google ranks them highly and they always come up in page one of any search for a business, you have the added extra of being able to spam more on twitter, you will lose fans on Facebook for posting too much but you can easily post 1-2 tweets per day on Twitter without anyone batting an eyelid. You can also use twiends, this is a reciprocal follow website, so you follow other business owners and they follow you back, you gain points for following them that you can then use to get followers, ensure to set your profile so that only people with a high un-following rate can follow you or you will just lose the followers after a few days.

Youtube - YouTube is leading the way in video marketing with a user friendly interface, it's easy to create a channel and upload a video. Google also makes this attractive by giving some videos priority placement in search results. Businesses are taking advantage of this added exposure by creating videos for the services/products they offer.

Linkedn - Create your account and add all your business information, it's a great SEO tool and if you're the CEO of your company it's nice to be recognised and be able to add a bit about your job/business online.

Instagram - Create your account and post pictures of your business at every opportunity, be sure to hashtag them appropriately. Pictures of events, products, premises, staff etc can be a great insight to customers about what your business is about.

Google+ - Google+ is becoming huge and every business should have a + page. You can keep it updated in a Facebook type style, with status' and you can add any Youtube videos, urls, links etc you like. It's again highly customisable.

Pinterest - A content sharing service that allows members to "pin" images, videos and other objects to their pinboard. Also includes standard social networking features - This one's particularly good if you sell items as you can add a link back to the website.

Myspace - Create a great profile and depending on your website, the best way to sell on MySpace is to use a set niche to leverage your products and create buzz for your brand.

You should create a 'link wheel' with lots of good quality, high ranking websites all linking in to yours.

Link dropping

Not to be confused with spamming!!!

You can easily build your websites online reputation by droppin a few cheeky links on relative websites such as:

Review centre - Add your website, then as people to give you (good) reviews. This will also allow you to do some customisation of your businesses profile. There are other review type websites you can add your website to depending on niche.

Another great review type website to use is Thebestof - you can easily add reviews and there is a best of for every city, they always rank high in SERPs.

Forums - This is where you need to draw the line between spamming and being seen as helpful, you can drop a cheeky link on a relative forum but I would only recommend this if you have been a member for a while and have a good couple of posts or you won't be taken seriously and I doubt your post will make it past the mods.

Articles - If you happen to be reading an article like this that has a comments section available, you can always for instance drop by to say hi and drop your website link in, as long as it's relative the author will usually allow it. So say you wanted to say hi and link to another free directory that would be fine by me, but if you just spammed my article with payday loan links for instance I wouldn't approve them.

Squidoo - You could create your own niche articles, squidoo will allow you more leverage to add pictures with a cheeky URL in and a link to your website. You must not be too overly promotional though.

Press release - You could write a press release about your websites, introducing your new shop, staff, events, products etc then post it on websites such as PR fire, Pressbox and PRlog.
