Personal Homemade Coupons

Handmade and personal coupons can be a great gift. As a kid, I can remember giving them to my parents when I didn't have any money.  For great gift ideas that don't cost money, handmade coupons are an excellent idea.  Consider what personal skills you have that would make a gift that someone would really appreciate.  As a kid, I remember giving my parents coupons like:

  • Good for two hours of babysitting
  • Good for one hour of pulling weeds
  • Good for doing the dishes one night

I'd often make a card and stick the homemade coupons on the inside. Now as an adult, I've gotten a few personal coupons from my wife and kids. Some really good coupons for watching the Masters uninterrupted, and organizing my closet.

The problem with gift certificates and coupons is that they often go without ever being redeemed. In fact, many businesses count on a percentage getting "broken", which means they get the cash, but never deliver the goods or service.

So here is my simple business idea for a website that allows you to make and send personal handmade coupons. The basic features include a website that connects with your friends on Facebook to make it easy to send coupons to people you know. You can create a coupon and send it to someone from the site. The person can login with their facebook account and see their coupon and easily print it. If the coupon is lost, the person can easily login and see what coupons they have and print another copy. When the coupon is redeemed, the person that gave the coupon will put in a code from the printed ticket that shows that it has been redeemed.

Some extra nice touches would be if the coupons were a bit like greeting cards that could be personalized with images and made unique. A section for coupon ideas so people that want to give personal coupons can get ideas like coupons for kids to give parents or coupons for wives to give husbands (my favorite).

The business model is ad supported with affiliates built into it. For example, you can offer your coupon to be delivered with real flowers as the card where you earn an affiliate commission. You can also sell virtual flowers that deliver the coupon to the person. I think this website could be built for less than $10K and would need another $10-$20K for the first marketing push.

If you build this, I will use it...

*This business may already exist as an app on Facebook, but I haven't seen it if it does.

UPDATE: Come to think of it, you could do a pretty cool mobile version of this as well.

I think I would like a coupon for one morning off taking the puppy for a walk to pee and poop. I think my family would rather spend money on a gift for me :)

I think the "gift of time coupon" (which is what I would call them) is a good idea.

This was one of the ideas I suggested in my - No Money Gift Hub - that the person should make a card offering the gift of their time to carry out a task for the gift. I do not have the skills or cash to set it up as an internet business but -If anyone needs someone to design the cards - I have a range of designs for cards that I am currently working on.

I love to get coupons for services aroung the house, such as yard work or car washes. I don't need any more knick-knacks to dust, just someone to dust the things I already have. Hint, hint, if any of the family or friends read this! Great hub and great business idea, though I'd have to start with a much smaller investment.

This does sound like a good idea. It's beyond my ability to build such a site, but a great idea for someone with the technical know-how.

Yes this is a great idea. I think it wouldn't be too hard to program either. Bah at $20k for marketing, Google is my friend.

Great ideas. We did use these when the kids were younger. Very innovative and a lot of fun too.

That was interesting, Paul. All those companies that sell ecards should look at your idea.

Very neat idea. You could really use your imagination and come up with a lot of variations. Good hub.
