10 Tips How to Become a Public Speaking Expert

I think you'll agree with me, that one of the hardest, most nerve wrecking situations you may experience in life could be standing in front of a group of people and giving a presentation. Not many of us are born with the talent of public speaking. It's a skill that is developed and needs a lot of practice.

However, it can be done.

No matter what the topic, presentations don't have to be boring. You have to be confident and not only grab, but hold the attention of the public.

How can you do this?
You'll be surprised how easy it is. There are techniques and tricks that professional speakers use to achieve exactly that. And I will try to teach you how.

1. Surprise you audience
It's always good to start with a bang! "My consulting approach can be summarized as 'I like to blow shit up. I am the Michael Bay of business.' says Cindy Gallop, public speaker and marketing guru.

2. Connect with the listeners
To get the full attention of the audience, your presentation has to be relatable. Make it about them, their aspirations, their goals and dreams. Connect your story on an emotional level and no topic will be boring anymore.

3. Use a shtick.
Yes, you can create your own, "signature" talk style. You may use a prop, a special talent you possess, unique performance style or intriguing and engaging storytelling. The possibilities are infinite. Move out of the ordinary and create something extraordinary!

4. Timing matters
Develop your presentation with different pace parts, but make it logical and coherent. Focus and be descriptive on the important parts, but run quickly through other parts. Make sure that your speech is dynamic, that things are happening and the audience won't fall asleep.

5. Humor works
Never underestimate the power of laughter. Start with a joke, midway show a funny cartoons - you'll immediately see how people get emotionally connected and engaged just by the simple act of having a chuckle. According to Scientific American, laughing releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that are created in our bodies in response to exercise, excitement, pain, spicy food, love and sexual orgasm, among other things.

6. Make it active
If you've been to a rock concert, you've probably seen how those performers "control" the crowd. An active, emotional audience is always more easily influenced than a passive one. You may see similar techniques used by teachers in a classroom, politicians or even preachers in churches. That's how powerful this method is.

7. Use a good, clean design
PowerPoint is a great piece of software, but not a great design tool. If you've looked at enough PowerPoint presentations, you'll know what I mean. Luckily, there are better ways. If you know InDesign, you can use it to create a breath taking visual designs. Of course, InDesign is meant for print, but a pdf file can be easily converted to a PowerPoint file. Other tools you can use are Canva, and awesome graphic design tool that is much easier and cheaper to use than PhotoShop, Unsplash for beautiful high-res photos your audience won't have seen before, eToon Cartoon Services for a wide selection of award-winning cartoons that will add that chuckle element to your presentation.

8. Keep it short and to the point
No one likes to be bored. Unfortunately, your presentation is overly long, you run the risk of turning the audience against you.

9. Be positive
Life itself can be hard sometimes. Focus on the good, positive aspects and that will be absorbed and appreciated by you listeners. Leaving your presentation energized will have a long-lasting impact on them.

10. Be yourself
Finally, the most important one - be genuine. When you're in the focus of your listeners, they will see every expression of your face, every change in tone, rhythm, posture... They will feel immediately if there's tension and nervousness and that will turn them against you.

      I think we didn't discuss much regarding confidence. Even experienced speakers get nervous while talking. Having faith in our own abilities would make us less stressed. When we feel confident, our doubts and apprehensions don't weigh us down. We will be able to focus on what's in front of us. Confident people tend to perform better when facing obstacle!
