How to Choose A Career: The Students' Guide In Finding Careers

Updated on March 29, 2012

How to Choose a Career:

Choosing a career is an integral and important point in any student’s life. This may prove to be a life-changing decision for the student, so one has to be really careful and thorough, while making a decision about how to choose a career. For deciding on how to choose a career, there are many things to consider.

Below is a simple, but a very thorough guide for all the students, to help them out on one of the biggest decisions of their lives. In this guide, a student will easily find its way on how to choose a career.

1. Self-Assessment:

One of the very basic steps on how to choose a career is to do a self-assessment of you. By self-assessment, it is meant that you should thoroughly examine yourself, as what sort of a person you are. You should be well-aware of your needs, interests, skills, qualities, turn offs, strength and personal preferences. By doing a well enough self-assessment, you will be able to know that which path is made for you, and you will be at significant ease, while deciding on your career path.

You should realize that what you enjoy doing the most? What is it that satisfies your self-esteem? What is it that you hate the most?

For example, if you hate cooking, you can never be a good chef, neither should you. That is why self-assessment is really necessary and is the basic step of how to choose a career.

2. Prioritize your needs:

After the self-assessment, you would have been able to narrow down some of the careers that you really love. After that, the next step is that you should prioritize and realize what your needs really are. If you are more of a social person, you cannot think of doing a job which consumes more hours than the usual job, or brings in more responsibilities, which ultimately eat up your time. This is because you would not be able to spend more time with your friends and family then. If accumulating wealth is your primary need, then you should focus on more lucrative ventures and careers. In this way, you will know what you will be really aiming for and will be satisfied through-out your life.

3. Evaluating competition and scope:

Not every dream come true, right? You may think of becoming a Hollywood actor, but you may forget the competition you will be fighting with. It is possible that you may love jogging photography, but you should realize and research about it, prior to making any decision, that will pursuing this career be enough to cater your needs and fulfilling your dreams to buy a villa and a BMW?

In short, be absolutely realistic and pragmatic in your approach.

4. Short-listing Careers:

In order to decide on how to choose a career, you should move step-by-step. While doing the above steps, you should be narrowing down with each single step to shortlist some viable careers, specifically for you. For example:

1. You self-assessed and evaluated yourself and found that you are a person who likes creativity.

2. You evaluated your interests and found these careers to be appealing to you: Jogging photography, painting and acting.

3. You evaluated the competition and found that being an actor is way out of you reach.

4. You evaluated the scope of your career and you found ‘Jogging Photography’ to be way lesser than you expected.

5. Then painting is the option left with you, that you love; has scope, and do not have much competition to fight with.

Choosing a career for a student may be a difficult step to make; however, doing it step-by-step will make it easier. For self-assessment, you can also visit a career counselor, who determines your interests and skills, thoroughly and professionally. I hope this guide will help you on how to choose a career and will assist you out on one of the biggest and important decisions of your life.

Very informative! My friends are still unsure as to what they should do for a career; so, I'll be sharing this on my facebook wall for them! The most important part of choosing a career, as well, is to know that you, the student, is 100% motivated to be part of the discourse community you choose. For example, I've weighed out my options and found that writing is my discourse community since I feel 100% motivated to write a fantasy novel. I would not be 100% motivated for culinary arts, medical, painting, military, etc. It is important to think, "Am I 100% ready to enter this field?" my best advice is to weigh out the options and ensure you do not have doubt in the field you wish to go into. If doubt crosses your mind, more the reason to work more intuitively.

Great Hub! Voted Up and sharing
