Has your manager asked you to set goals for the next year, and you don't know what to do? Setting solid, attainable goals at work can help you show your manager your value and allow you to move up the corporate ladder.

This article will help you choose areas to focus on for improvement and set goals for your next performance review period.

Review Your Previous Performance Review

A great way to find areas to work on is to look at your previous performance review. Where there any areas that your manager scored you low? If so, this is a great opportunity to focus on that area and set a goal to improve your performance. Achieving a higher rating in this area on your next performance review is a great way to prove your success.

Review Your Workload for the Next Performance Period

Another great way to identify opportunities for self improvement is to look at your upcoming workload. Identify projects that will require specific skills, and then create goals around those skills. For example, if you are going to take a leadership role in a project, you could write a goal around demonstrating strong leadership skills. You can then use specific examples from that project to prove that you achieved your goal.

Review Your Company's Goals

It looks great to management if you align your personal goals with those of the company. Review your company's major goals, and then create a personal development goal that aligns with the larger goal. For example, if your company has a goal to increase sales by 10% over the next year, you might set a personal goal to contribute to that sales increase. Make sure you highlight your contribution to the company's success.

Make it Measurable

Whatever you decide to focus on when you create your work goals, make sure that the goals are measurable. Providing numbers, facts, and quotes from co-workers or clients are great ways to prove that you achieved the goals you set.
