How to Get That Raise You Want
When do you expect to get that raise you want? And what are you doing to get it? If you are like many people who are often disappointed at “Raise Time” and really want or need that raise in pay, why not consider giving it to yourself?
Now you are probably asking “How do I do that?” Admittedly there is a trick to it, and it requires some work to achieve this objective. In fact, there are 4 simple steps to follow and you will see it happening.

Justify your raise
By following these steps, you make it easier for your employer to grant you a raise. Don’t sit there and expect your boss to perform miracles for you, be proactive, get up and make those raises happen. Also, do not take the pleading approach, “Because I need it” as this can be annoying and causes tension. One executive was asked why he kept a bowl of goldfish on his desk, he answered, “Because it’s relaxing to have something here that doesn’t open its mouth only to complain or ask for a raise!” Concentrate your efforts on the effective way, as you follow these 4 steps.
1 Do Recognised Work (and do it well)
What does your boss recognise at raise time, politics or performance? If politics, look out or maybe get out. If performance, you’ve got work to do. You can easily find out standards of departmental performance. Complete some assignments and ask how they stacked up. Set personal objectives and check out if they comply with the program. Are you doing something good and worthwhile for the department? Set up a quarterly review to ensure that you are doing productive work and that the results are recognised as good work, find out what needs to change or improve and then follow and do what is required of you. The main objective of step one is to ensure that your manager sees you as an industrious and conscientious worker.
2 Read The Pay Policies
Most companies have a wage and salary manual; some places have a grading system where employees are paid according to their particular grade, the only way you get paid more is to do whatever is necessary to earn or qualify for an upgrade. Once again, you need to work with your boss, get him or her to understand that you are willing to comply with company policy and to work hard for an increase, that you will expect to be rewarded with a raise once you have earned it.
3 Update, what you are doing
Document and report on what you are doing to support the level of progress in your job. How you are getting closer to the level required for a salary increase. Your motive is to get the boss, or the person who authorises increases to agree that you are doing the right thing to qualify for an eventual raise. As an example and depending on the type of work you do, is it measurable, has your output increased, if you’re in sales or the service industry, have you closed more or better sales, are you serving more clients? Do this and you will stand a chance of getting more pay or recognition.
4 Justify Your Raise
It was Jim Rohn who said, “The market place dictates what you are worth and how much you will get paid, and to earn more money you need to make yourself more valuable to the market place.” There are many ways for you to become more valuable, to the market place or to your employer. You will have to decide on how you can add value to what you do for a living, how to become more qualified and skilled in the market place, this applies to employees and those who are self-employed. At the end of the day you CAN have a positive influence on what you earn in your vocation.
