How to Make Money While You Sleep Series Part II (B) - Creating A Product

Updated on August 6, 2012

Before I deliver Part III to the series I am going to add to Part II because of the number of emails I received requesting information on how to specifically create a product. So here are the steps on product creation for:

Ebooks & Reports

Email Newsletters

Affiliate products

Ebooks and Reports

The best format in which to produce ebooks and reports is PDF. These files best resemble a book that can be read on screen page by page. However before you create a PDF you have to write the ebook or report in a word document.

What I usually do is, research the topic making essential notes as I go along. When I have completed the research I go to my laptop and type out what I want to say. At this stage there is no grammar, spelling or editing. Once I have completed my document I then:

  • Correct any errors in grammar and spelling
  • Add relevant images and design a front page. It is important to make your ebook visually appealing. Experiment with colors and designs, but make sure you post relevant artwork. i.e. you do not want a colourful, bohemian collage on an ebook about banking.
  • Add numbers on the footer of each page
  • Add a relevant header (Example: Title of eBook or report and name of author) I would add this header starting from page 2.
  • Voila Done!

Now that you are sure about your creation it is time to convert it into the finished article.

Adobe, the creator of PDFs allows you to convert documents to PDF free.

The next step is to click on print in your file menu and choose to print in PDF format. (see Fig 1)

You will then be asked to enter a file name to save the document, but before your do that click on ‘additional properties’ (Fig.2) a box (Fig.3) will come up and this is where you can set the security features. Here you click the security tab, then PDF Security followed by clicking the box that says ‘allow printing’ and ‘OK’. Your document will then be configured.

I only allow the recipient to print the document but disallow changing, copying, editing or inserting anything. So only click printing allowed.

Email Newsletters

Creating an email newsletter is a great way to stay in touch with your customers and keep them up-to-date with your latest products or additions to your services.

You can use external services offered by companies such as Aweber and Get Response that provide templates on which you can write your newsletters. Alternatively you can create a newsletter using Microsoft word that offers tutorials on how to:

  • Develop a mailing list
  • Set up your newsletter template
  • Complete your newsletter and
  • Send off your newsletter

Personally I use Aweber to build my mailing list, send follow-up letters and newsletters to my customers.

In order to build a mailing list you must first of all promote your product or service in order that prospects will subscribe. Every week without fail I send out thousands of letters to mailing list from which I receive a percentage of visitors who subscribe for more information.

With the help of Aweber’s subscription forms on my websites and squeeze pages they collect the data of name and email address and after the prospects confirm their opt-in, Aweber sends them letters I have written in sequence; for example after letter 1 has been despatched I leave a gap of between 3 – 7 days before letter 2 goes out.

Email marketing companies is probably the best way to carry out effective email marketing.

Affiliate products

When it comes to creating affiliate products you are in for a treat because you literally do not have to do anything except market the chosen affiliate program.

Professional creators of affiliate marketing program provide everything for you from the sales letters, website, squeeze page, banners and follow-up email letters. If you join an affiliate program and these items are not provided as standard give that program a wide berth.

There are a variety companies online that offer affiliate marketing program, such as Clickbank, Linkshare, Plimus, Commission Junction, Trade Doubler etc, where you can find a product or service that will meet your niche’s needs.

These companies are free to join.

Thank you for your comment Redberry Sky. As a newbie there is so much to take in and it could get a bit overwhelming. Take your time and learn the whole internet process. Try reading The Internet for Dummies' it's a good book that teaches the basics, and when you are up to speed by all means come back to the How to Make Money While You Sleep Series.

Incredibly detailed practical info. I'm nowhere near being able to use this information yet because I'm still just learning how internet and online stuff works, but as I get the hang of it all, yours will be the advice I return to.

I had to laugh at the title of this hub. I do marketing for an artist and told her that we have to find a way she could make money while she slept. Actually I did...I got her a licensing agreement. This is a great hub. I just went on your facebook page and asked to be a friend.
