How to choose a qualified commercial painting contractor

To ensure you get the most Qualified Commercial Painting Contractor, follow these simple steps.

Ask the Right Questions.

Company History is Important:
How long have they been in business? Has it been under the same name for that entire period of time? Are they members of the PDCA (Painting & Decoration Contractors of America) or the local Chamber of Commerce? Do they now or have they ever had any open cases with the Better Business Bureau or the Department of Labor? If so when and why?

When you called the office did someone answer the phone or did you have to leave a message? Can they provide you with a time and day of when to schedule your estimate or will someone have to get back to you? Will they provide you with their email or cell phone? Open communication is essential when working on larger projects.

Do they have a documented OSHA Compliant or PDCA Approved Safety Program? What certifications do they have? Confined Space, Lead Abatement, Fall Protection and Scaffolding Rigging and Safety.

Management and Support:
Your contractor should have a complete office Support Staff including, estimating department, full project management team, customer service and sales departments. Detailed Proposals should be sent via email, fax and hard copy in the mail.

Employee Testing:
Each Employee should have mandatory annual health testing, periodic blood profiles respirator fit testing, drug and alcohol testing and individual background checks.

At least 10 or more project specific references.

Insurance and Risk Management:
General Liability, Comprehensive vehicle policy, workman's compensation, inland marine and equipment floater, pollution liability and a large umbrella.

Training and Certification:
A qualified commercial painting contractor should have some or all of these certifications, lead abatement certified, an accredited PDCA painting contractor, Pre-qualified NJ schools construction corp. in general painting, lead abatement, historical sites, steel tanks and structures. NJ dept. of labor, registered public works contractor, US defense logistics agency registered contractor, NJ business registration for state agency and casino service contractors and NJ dept. of Treasury Classifications: General Construction; Lead Abatement; Painting Historical Sites; Painting Tanks, Steel Structures and Elevated Structures.

They should use computer aided scheduling and enterprise application software and contact management software to ensure customers get the support and follow-up they deserve.
