Importance of Motivation and Morale–Are You Motivated?
While working, the motivation and morale of the employees plays a big role in their performance. Every organization works toward the attainment of specific goals. In order for a business organization to achieve its goals, it has to utilize the abilities of human efforts to their best level of performance. There should be someone who has to stimulate employees so as to get the desired course of action done in an efficient way.
Have you ever worked with a person who has low morale because he is not motivated? How does it feel to work with such a person? Working with such a person is difficult, he may end up pulling you down. People who have low motivation and morale will pull you down by demoralizing you each time you put more efforts in working towards the attainment of goals. They will literally end up killing your high morale.
We get it wrong at times when we come across people who have low morale and motivation. We refer them as being lazy not knowing that it is motivation and high morale they are lacking. All they need is a person who will motivate and boost their morale in performing tasks to their best level of abilities.
What motivates you to work each day? Are you able to work in a consistent way despite the disappointments that you will be experiencing? Are you capable of working alone with high morale without anyone motivating you other than yourself?
Ecclesiastes 9:10 "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going."
This is the verse in the Holy Bible that I like referring to whenever my motivation and high morale is about to depart from me.
An entrepreneur has to find ways of motivating himself. He has to have high morale in making the most of his entrepreneurial spirit. He has also to motivate his employees. Self–motivated is one of the traits that entrepreneurs should possess. An entrepreneur should have a good team work with his employees.
When employees face challenges and things become difficult for them, he has to motivate them so as to maintain their motivation and high morale. This will make them to work even harder and not to lose their focus. He has to win their confidence so that they believe in him and also to work towards accomplishing what they perceive as being impossible.
The goal behind motivating and increasing high morale of employees is to have a staff that is committed in ensuring that the organization is successful. Employees will work as if they are the owners of the organization with little or hardly any supervision.
Of all the resources of production, human resource/manpower is the only resource of production that any organization cannot do without. It is the only dynamic resource of production. It is capable of performing beyond the expected level of production if it is well motivated or below the expected level of performance if it is not motivated. Bearing this in mind, it is the responsibility of an entrepreneur or the management of an organization to motivate employees if they expect to achieve high performance.
Difference Between Motivation and Morale
What is the difference between motivation and morale? We can only know the difference that exists between motivation and morale by defining them.
"Motivation is a process of stimulating people to act for the purpose of achieving desired goals."
"Morale is a total attitude towards one's work and one's colleagues."
From above definitions, motivations deals with stimulating people. This does not mean that you cannot stimulate yourself to work in order to achieve your goals. If you are working alone, there are many ways that you can stimulate yourself towards attaining your goals. Morale has to do with the attitude one has towards his work and the people he is working with.
Since motivation is a process of stimulating yourself or people to work in order to achieve goals, morale becomes its by–product. Therefore, we will be correct to say that it is motivation that brings about high morale.
What Motivation And Morale Involves
What makes a person to have high motivation and morale? Human beings compared to other animals created by God are the most social animals. Human beings need to socialize with one another and as such every individual should be treated fairly by others while working and socializing with them.
A person will be affected emotionally and psychologically if he is treated unfairly. This in turn will lower his performance. The morale of an employee will be lowered if the organization treats him unfairly and if other employees do not want to associate and work with him as a team.
Motivation and morale is brought about by three needs as discussed below.
1.) Physical Needs
Motivation and morale is affected by basic needs. You will have high motivation and morale if you have food, shelter and clothing. Employees who have low motivation and morale while working are not able to cover all costs in providing food, shelter and clothing for their families because they are poorly paid by their employers. Employees should be paid salaries/wages that is able to satisfy their basic needs and the one that makes them to live a decent life with their families in order to stay motivated while working for the organization.
2.) Social Needs
The social needs of a person affect motivation and morale that a person has while working. Organizations should create a working environment that is good, which recognizes each employee and allows them to socialize with one another, to associate themselves freely with groups or team of employees. This will make them to be motivated and have high morale while working.
3.) Egoistic Needs
An employee needs to be recognized by his employer and other employees for the kind of work he does. He needs to be appreciated and not to be treated unfairly in a way that he perceives himself as unwanted, unworthy and a loser. The motivation and morale of an employee will be boosted if his employer appreciates him by praising him and rewarding him for his work that he does.
How Motivation and High Morale Helps You
1.) Motivation and morale increases the chances of you succeeding. This is because there will be more work done by employees and yourself. You and some of the employees will be working overtime as a result of being motivated and having high morale. Goals will be achieved easily within the specified time or even before the deadline.
2.) You will feel satisfied with your work since you will be working willingly to your best ability by using your knowledge and skills. Working with employees as a team will be easy because there will be cooperation as a result of you and them being motivated and having high morale. There will be minimum supervision.
3.) There is an increase in performance. You and employees will be working hard to increase performance. A lot will be achieved as a result of being motivated and having high morale.
4.) You will not be experiencing high rate of absenteeism. Each day you will be looking forward to work willingly with employees since you have high morale and you are motivated to work. Every employee likes working, therefore they will not wish to be absent since they are motivated. The rate of employee turnover will be at minimum.
5.) When you are motivated and your morale is high, you will welcome any change that occurs. Since employees are well motivated, they will not resist the change that the organization does .
