Indian Police Service Limited Exam (IPS) - 2012

Updated on March 7, 2012

Disclaimer: This Exam is not for all graduates.

This was surprising. UPSC has come up with a Notification this morning (06/03/2012) about Indian Police Services Limited Competitive Exam. This notification can be seen on leading dailies and will also be published in Employment News for the week March 10 - March 16. You can also download the notification on UPSC website (link given below). Why this is surprising? It's because:

1. Why separate Exam for IPS selection: Since we are already having UPSC Civil Services Exam which is conducted for IPS selection among others, why is there a need for another exam for IPS selection in the same year. One thought crossed my mind that may be there are backlog vacancies in the department and the need a separate exam for filling these vacancies.

2. Date Conflict with UPSC IAS Exam: This was very frustrating, both UPSC Prelim and IPS Limited exams are going to be conducted on the same day i.e. May, 20. I couldn't understand this. Why would UPSC conduct both the exams on the same day. This meant that candidates can choose either of the exam not both.

3. Entirely Different Syllabi of Both IAS and IPS: Syllabus of the IPS Limited Exam consistes of 2 objective type tests and 2 subjective tests ( English and GS) at the same time. This is stark in contrast to UPSC Exam. How can there be 2 different types of standards for selection in the same post in 2 different Exam.

The Hidden Fact - Read Between the lines

I got the answer when I read the eligibility conditions. There is a separate clause in the eligibility. Which makes the exam applicable for select few who are working in police departments (central and State).

Separate Eligibility Criteria: Candidate has completed 05 years of continuous and actual service as Deputy Superintendent of Police in States under State Police Service or Assistant Commandants in Central Para Military Forces (Central Reserve Police Service, Border Security Force, Indo Tibet Border Police, Central Industrial Security Force and Sashastra Seema Bal) or Officers of the Rank of Captain or Major or equivalent in the Armed Forces. He also should have an unblemished service record.

If you are clearing the above mentioned criteria, this exam is for you. Provided that you also meet the age criteria i.e. 35 yrs (1 year relaxation for OBC and 2 years for SC/ST).
