Jobs for Senior Citizens
One of the shocks in my life when I reached the older stages of middle age was watching not only my jobs disappear but my profession show less interest in my services. Now, I happened to be in a business that went through unusual conglomeration in the 1980s and 1990s. From perhaps 20 or so companies with full staffs providing a both front and back office functions, the number was whittled down to three very, very large conglomerates. These had to save money to pay for the buyouts, and one way to save was to lay off senior people with significant salaries.
Between Linkedin and Facebook, I have reconnected with friends and colleagues from my old career going back almost 40 years. Somewhat to my surprise, all but one of many are no longer in relatively senior positions and high paying jobs in that business. They have all had to find something else to do. I knew there was a lot of talent no longer serving the business we all chose when we were younger.
I also watched my father lose his two businesses during the oil bust of the early to mid 1980s. He simply had no margin for error when interest rates zoomed and the economy tanked. After a lifetime of building his businesses, he was out in the cold at 56 years old. He never really recovered. My parents lived a comfortable but sparing lifestyle for the next 25 years.
So I began thinking about my own immediate future, about the future of baby boomers as they reach senior citizen status and about today's senior citizens. What do you do if you can't live on Social Security?
There is good news both for today's seniors and for boomers about to become seniors.
First, attitudes about older workers have changed. More companies recognized that older workers rate high in the top seven qualities that companies look for. Older workers are loyal and well worth any investment in training them by the company. They will be around as long as the new technology. And surprisingly, older workers usually take few sick days than their younger counterparts. With the changes in our culture, older workers also tend to have a stronger work ethic than the young.
The other good news for older workers is that there are a lot resources for seniors to find jobs. You just have to know how to access those resources. With minimum computer skills you can search the web and find jobs in companies that appreciate mature workers.

And don't forget your local senior citizen resources centers. Use the local search option in search engines and enter senior citizens and the local jurisdiction. You will find places to call, and one phone call will lead you to people who can give you more information.
There is more than just hope out there for seniors and about to be seniors. There is real work at real companies that will treat you well, and there are more and more opportunities to create you old job.
