PROJECT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

Updated on August 4, 2010

Teamwork and project management. (3rd ed.)

Project Management software is a form of communication

and it communicates to team members the; project name, date, tasks to be performed, who will perform them, start date, end date, duration, percentage complete, working days, days complete, days remaining, and a graphic representation of the projects projected completion verses actual completion percentage. Furthermore, the percentge complete, days complete, and days remaining are the information that  must be augmented by the Project Manager daily to ensure that everyone has updated information.

Gantt charts can be used to

communicate to your team what is going on and how your project is progressing. You can either use Gantt software or an Excel template. I prefer to use the later. Furthermore, Gantt charts were fist created by a mechanical engineer named Henry Gantt in 1910. Gantt charts are very useful for smaller projects. However, most Project Managers today use Microsoft Project as their Project Management software choice. Personally, I have never had the opportunity to use Microsoft Project as of yet.

Gantt charts have several limitations to them.

Firstly, the sequencing of activities are not represented properly. One cannot tell by looking at the chart which task is done, over lapped, or delayed. Secondly, it does not show which tasks were started early and which task were started late, which does not reflect the true status of your project. Lastly, the Gantt chart does not show any uncertainty in any activity which will give you an inaccurate picture of your projects duration.
