Learn How to Generate Traffic for Your Website Using 13 Free and Affordable Strategies
The home business industry is growing, and it's spreading fast. Many families are following the trend for reasons such as a crippled economy, or just not wanting to commute each day.
While the industry is promising, a large percentage of home business owners can't seem to figure out one thing. Most just don't know how to generate traffic for their websites.
Regardless of what you may have heard, internet traffic is the primary ingredient to achieve success.
Now getting more traffic to your websites isn't as easy as you may think. To get the results you seek it is going to take either time or money; maybe even a little of both. There are pay sources all over the internet claiming to teach you how to generate traffic, but can you trust them? Maybe, maybe not. Some people mean well, while some can care less.
Either way it's going to cost you time. Luckily you managed to find this page. I am going to use my 10+ years of experience in the home business industry to share with what has worked for me. The following list will give you some ideas to get more hits to your website; without having to break the bank.
1. Order business cards
You can drive more traffic to your website with this age old tool. Vista Print is constantly advertising promotions where you can get hundreds of free cards; all you pay for is the shipping. Get a batch with your web address on it and feel free to use these business card marketing strategies.
2. Make road signs
Knowing how to generate traffic sometimes requires creativity. Just like those yard sale signs you see on Saturday, make one with your domain on it. Induce curiosity by keeping your message brief. When you're ready for a more refined look, seek out a hardware store for a vinyl sign, a stencil, and maybe spray paint or a Sharpie.
3. Don't underestimate classified ads
You can create free online traffic by using popular sites like Craigslist , Backpage , and ClassifiedAds.com . Aside from these being free sources, they attract a lot of buzz. After all, what good is an ad if hardly anyone sees it. The trick with classified ads is that you have to post them consistently. Start with posting one per day.
4. Expand your brand
I cannot emphasize on this enough; learn how to blog. In fact, you open another avenue to get more hits to your online business by simply starting one. Most blogging platforms are free to join and easy to use. Don't just maintain your company site. A blog can usually be more interactive with customers, and you can link each site together.
5. Swap internet traffic for more traffic
Ever heard of a traffic exchange? Use them! Next to word of mouth, it's one of the cheapest forms of advertising out there. These exchanges allow the owners of websites to show "a site for a site." You watch mine and I'll watch yours. For each one you watch, you earn a set number of credits which you can later use to advertise your site. Unless you purchase credits, traffic exchanges can be time consuming, though.
6. Join many safelists
Safelists are similar to traffic exchanges in that you earn credits to generate traffic. Another similarity is that you can purchase, or simply agree to watch another member's website. The main difference with safe lists is that instead of the "inside a forum" feel of an exchange, the opportunity to earn credits go right into your email's inbox. There are many safe lists to choose from. They're free, but dedicate a separate email address for them.
7. Implement Amazon and Ebay
Want to know a unique way how to generate traffic with these sites? Register for an account. If you already have one, be sure to fill out your profiles completely. Since you probably already shop online you may as well use these high ranking sites to create more traffic. When editing your Amazon profile there is a place to display your website. On Ebay, take the extra time to create your "About Me" page. You can add links and HTML banners there also.
8. Enlist in the Adzly Army
One excellent option for free online traffic is to use Adzly. This can be best described as a Google Adsense but without all the confusion and high costs per click. This free service allows you to create targeted ads that can placed on hundreds (and even more) websites out there. There is even a viral aspect of it which is pretty cool. Adzly is definitely worth trying.
9. Make a video for your business
Speaking of viral advertising, relying on YouTube and other video sharing sites is a powerful way to get traffic. Video marketing is so powerful, I cannot believe the high number of people that doesn't know how to generate traffic with it. You can easily do a review of your business, a how to of some sort, or a business profile. Make it intriguing and watch your exposure blow up.
10. Get your social bookmarking on
You can get more hits to your business website by simply submitting them to social bookmarking sites. There are many out there, but I like to use the more popular ones like Digg , Reddit , StumbleUpon , and Yahoo's Delicious . Members of these communities know how to generate traffic consistently because social bookmarking is viral. All they have to do is add their site, and it gets shown to thousands of members to share across the web; much like YouTube. Bookmarking adds a lot of clout to your sites in terms of search engine placement, too.
11. An oldie but goodie; the signature
If you're not yet signing all of your emails, you need to catch up with the times. Free online traffic can come as easy as an email recipient choosing to click your link. Never underestimate the power of curiosity. I can be a testament to that because I am naturally drawn to a senders signature block. Also make it easy on yourself by creating a default block within your signature settings. This technique is made even more effective by including an inspirational quote of some sort.
12. Article Directories
If you ask any home business expert how to generate traffic consistently, most will agree will that writing articles is the most efficient. If you love to write and can provide value on a particular niche, you'll be able to send more traffic to your website. Article writing is my favorite because once you dedicate time to one article, your content will be on the web for years to come. Many article directories are free but this strategy works best when you perform a thorough keyword research prior to writing.
13. Hit the forums
You can create traffic by joining forums that are about things you like. It could be about gardening, video games, or sports. Some forums will allow you to add signatures to the end of your posts, while some will not. It make take you some time to find the ones that aren't strict, but when you do, do not abuse it. Your forum contributions should be valuable to the community and more than just a useless, "I agree, John."
Always remember that knowing how to generate traffic doesn't require much money. There is a plethora of low cost to free ways. You just have to be resourceful and creative. For your advertising to be effective, however, you most certainly have to be consistent and targeted. Make it a part of your daily regiment to get traffic to your website, and you will see changes in your bottom line.
