3 Legit Jobs Online for the Recently Unemployed

Updated on April 20, 2012

What To Do When You Lose Your Job

Sudden job loss is very frightening, especially for anyone with children and a monthly mortgage payment. Waking up in the morning without a way to make money for you and your family is a horrible feeling.

Filing for unemployment benefits and searching for a replacement job are two absolute steps to take immediately after job loss, but finding a worthwhile offline job right away isn't always an easy task.

Although unemployment benefits can be a life-saving source of income for the recently unemployed, it is still taxed by the IRS at 10%, which puts a pretty big dent in weekly payments. For some, unemployment won't cover the monthly bills.

Collecting unemployment benefits for an extended period of time will also make it very difficult, if not impossible, to refinance your mortgage if need be. This is because, for a refinance, banks need to see recent tax returns and unemployment income documented on a return is unacceptable for a refinance. Take a look at your financial situation and decide what's going to be best for you.

If you are unable to find a replacement job offline, or don't qualify for unemployment benefits, don't panic, because there are quite a few online jobs for working at home.

Write Articles for People

There are dozens of places online where business owners and bloggers post ads for available writing gigs. Quality writing is always in demand and while there is a lot of competition, there are always people looking for a good writer. If you write articles for money, you are considered an independent contractor and you must pay your own taxes. Most sites send out a 1099 at tax time.

Sites like Elance, oDesk, and Textbroker or a few good places to find assignments to write for money, but there are several more. Out of the three mentioned, Textbroker is probably the easiest and fastest way to get started earning money from article writing. Read about Textbroker here: Textbroker Review: Is It A Good Place to Make Money Writing Articles?

Writing articles certainly isn't for everyone, but there is money to be made for those who enjoy it. You can earn $7 to $20 per writing assignment, depending on the site and the word count. Writing articles privately for clients can bring $30 or more per assignment. If you are motivated to produce articles daily, it is very possible to earn $500 or more per week, which is likely greater than weekly unemployment.

Home Telemarketing/Answering Service

I know, nobody likes a telemarketer, but most of these jobs are now worked from home and they don't always involve outbound calling to sell credit cards or other products. Now there are quite a few answering service jobs for taking inbound calls. All you need is a home phone line and a computer to download the company software that will be used for punching in and out of your daily shift.

Companies like LiveOps and Arise hire people to answer inbound calls at home and some of these jobs come with hourly pay and even insurance benefits, depending on the number of hours put in each week. The expected start pay is between $8 to $10 per hour and taxes are taken out of your paycheck like a traditional offline job.

This could be a good temporary opportunity for a recently unemployed individual who wants a work at home job that comes with secure hourly pay. This way, you're at least guaranteed a set number of hours per week, unlike freelancing, where you are totally responsible for finding gigs to make money.

Talking to people on the phone all day definitely isn't for everyone, which is why many people hate this type of a job, but everyone's different. Strong communication skills and patience are necessary in order to deal with difficult and irate people. The one downside to this job is that most companies require a background check fee of around $50.

Phone Actrress

No doubt, this is a weird and unusual job that most women would never do, but a phone actress can earn $50 to $100 per hour. For the newly unemployed, in desperate need of income, a phone actress job can be very lucrative and not all phone actress jobs revolve around adult entertainment. This job is ideal for someone who lives alone.

The best places to find openings for a phone actress job is by visiting a job board, such as, or newspaper classified ads. Applying for this job usually involves filling out a standard application online and taking a voice test for a recruiter. If your voice passes the test, the recruiter will contact you for orientation and training. This job requires a land line and a head set, as well as a private space.

A phone actress can earn up to $.28 per minute, so the longer the conversation, the more money in your pocket. Most companies will pay on a weekly basis, either by check or direct deposit. Some companies deduct taxes from earnings. or mail a 1099 later.

Hey Matt...I am truly starting to enjoy HubPages because of posts like this. I am underemployed in South Carolina, yet I have three college degrees! So this provided me some useful, REAL information. Don't think I will do the last one, but it certainly can help those who are starving I guess. Personally, sometimes I think if I have to look at the Careerbuilder website one more time, that I will scream!
