Why NOT Sell your Old Essays or Ask for Writing Services for your Coursework

Updated on May 18, 2013
5 out of 5 stars from 3 ratings of Online Academic Writing Services

Why you shouldn’t buy an essay from the internet.

Making money online is a new alternative way of getting an extra amount of money from the comfort of your home. Apart from this very site, Hubpages, where one can not only publish hubs and make some decent money, but also meet some new and fantastic people that could as well become your friends, one can make money online by selling their old essays or get their coursework written by someone else, in one of the numerous sites available that offer “academic’’ writing services.

It is no hidden secret that there are many online businesses that forward students or graduates to sell their old papers. I must admit that based on what those sites claim, you get up to $20 per submitted essay, depending on its type (research paper, term paper, with or without references, etc.), which is good money for an old and useless (to you) piece of paper. Other sites, claim they can get you a super unique and sky-rocketing paper for a certain price. However, there are traps that you don’t want to fall into and reasons to teach you out of this, so it might be a good idea to re-consider if you are thinking of selling or buying an essay online.

Reason #1: Most sites require you to create an account, then upload your essay (if you are a seller) and wait a time period that varies between 1-2 weeks (unless to pay some extra money) to get your paper evaluated and tested. Supposedly, if your paper meets the high quality standards as set from the site, you will be notified and the paper will be released to the public for review and purchase. Meanwhile, you have uploaded a paper (or more than one) that can as well be sold without you ever knowing about it. All it needs is some skillful changes in your writing and your paper is another person’s paper and is widely sold throughout the net, allowing these companies to make big bucks out of YOUR work! What is more, there are sites that actually ask you to pay money so that your essay won’t be tested at all, like Imagine if you are a potential buyer and you decide to give your money for an untested paper! It will most likely be total crap…so why waste your time and money for something that will give you a D or less? You can easily achieve that in a few minutes yourself!

Reason #2: Yes, the internet has made cheating easy, but rest assure that it has made catching cheaters equally easy! There are software available that instructors can use (and trust me, they DO use vaguely) and detect a plagiarized or copied paper. What is the point jeopardizing your term’s hard work over such a risky attempt? Other than that, you could get kicked out of school for violating the school’s code of honor, as described below. Perhaps the fastest way to kiss your academic future and dreams goodbye, since your penalty will be on your records forever.

Reason #3: The academic community strongly opposes to plagiarism and in fact, it is considered a crime to plagiarize. Each educational institution, college, university or high school has its own honor code to deal with academic crime, so what is the point of risking a penalty? After all, your teachers are more aware of your writing than you would ever have imagined; therefore, submitting a paper written by someone else, would most likely ring an alarm to your teacher, especially if it is a college professor that researches for a living! Your writing style is as unique as your personal traits, so there is not much likeliness you will get a paper with similar tone and research as your past papers. Bottom line? Chances you get caught are way too high!

Reason #4: The sites that offer essays and research papers, among others, claim that you will get an original. However, there is no guarantee that you won’t get a copied paper. Those sites usually have a database with all submitted works and are free to sell and re-sell without you even knowing about it (nor the people that either wrote those papers from scratch or uploaded a past essay of theirs). Imagine if you deliver a paper that your professor has already read in the past! What is more, plagiarism software will even pick the phrases that most writers use in numerous papers they write, so even if you DO get a one-of-a-kind paper, there is still a great chance you get caught.

Reason #5: The quality of such papers is usually below average and according to the testimonies from students that have purchased and used an old essay (or one that is claimed to be unique and written from scratch for them), research is rather sloppy and the format of the paper usually doesn’t match your requirements. Ultimately, you would have to re-test and correct the wrongs in what you paid money for. Plus, there is a money-back guarantee, in case you are cheated with a low-quality or even worse, an irrelevant, weak paper.

Reason #6: Teachers give less and less generic assignments, which makes cheating more difficult. Therefore, submitting a fake paper will probably be irrelevant with your topic.

Reason #7: You never get to acquire the skills to do proper research, which will be very useful for you in order to reach graduation and then after. You can’t have others write for you all the way; it is best to buy your way out of it, rather than into it, as you will end up only cheating yourself. Set aside that, your professors try to help you master all the critical life skills that derive from researching, meeting deadlines and stating your opinion via an argument. It comes naturally that this probably won’t get you anywhere on the long run.

Reason #8: Nobody guarantees you will get your paper done before your deadline and equally importantly, nobody guarantees the paper you will get will be the top-notch quality that will give you a good grade. Image if you get content that you don’t agree with and you need to either re-write it yourself or ask the one that wrote for you make the changes. Time is not what you have plenty and the clock is ticking.

Reason #9: You allow corruption grow and take a leading role in society. Those that pay their way through college, become officials that forward and favor bribery, while growing up, in their senior jobs.

Scary information on how prevalent the problem is becoming.

Yes, Shan...and it gets worse as years go by. It seems that students have been more motivated to get good grades than actually becoming knowledgeable and educated members of the community and professionals on the long run. Thanks for commenting...:)

I agree. I remember when a C meant you were an average student. Average is not good enough any longer at least not for employers who only look at credentials and solicit the expected answers from potential employees. My father was a brilliant person. He did not finish high school because of the Great Depression. I worked for a publisher who did not go to college. He could not write news stories, but he knew how to run a newspaper and knew how to hire someone who did know how to spot and hire a good writer. At one time being an individual was something we sought. Now, people are forced to be part of the masses, no matter what it takes.

This is a great piece of advice. I had to think otherwise on selling my papers after reading this article. Thanks for the information.

Hi Remmy. I am glad you find the article appealing. The same thing happened to me. I tried to sell a past research paper that got me an A. Trust me...there are no safeguards...the site just took my uploaded research paper and I heard nothing from them ever since....of course, my research paper in all over the internet now...

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Always welcome :)

I don't think it's a problem when it's cheating in terms of plagiarism. I think there's a problem when college students begin taking AD/HD medication to focus on their papers. I have so many friends who do that and, it's harmful AND cheating. Like an athlete taking steroids. That's how much pressure is being put on us!

      Hi Zayne,

You definitely have a point there. It is getting harder and harder for students to handle academic pressure. My older son is about to sit his final tests in a while and he is under enormous pressure. I guess cheating at school has many faces, and you have just unveiled one of them! Thanks so much for your point of view! Greatly appreciated. Wish the best... :)
