Mesothelioma and Other Cancers Linked To Asbestos
Do you have mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It is a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining of the body's internal organs called the mesothelium. Asbestos also causes cancer of the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and larynx. The latency period for these cancers to develop is 10 - 30 years. Diffuse pleural thickening is another problem related to asbestos.
Asbestos has been around for years and was used heavily in the construction industry because of its fire and electrical resistance properties, as well as its inexpensive cost. Manufacturing companies saw this as a doorway for money but never did they once care about the people who would be handling asbestos fibers and then later in their lives develop life-threatening cancers.
The American Bar Association in the United States has taken a stand against companies that manufacture asbestos, forcing them to shut down and ultimately file for bankruptcy. To date, the amount of asbestos related lawsuit settlements analysts' estimated has totaled more than $250 billion just in the United States alone with more future claims underway for those who have developed health problems linked to asbestos exposure.
