Online databases: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase.

Online Database

There exists a difference between data and information. Information can be interpreted and understood by a person in its form while data are values and facts which are stored in passive forms in a medium which require further manipulation to make sense. Database is the storage place for the information collected by organizations. The bridge between data and information is provided by database management systems which ensure that the data are converted into usable information in the organizations.

Databases are not developed equally. In order to create a database driven application that is efficient it is important to understand what a particular database can do and how it operates. Databases are developed to initiate different aspects of an organization hence the difference in composition and applications. A database being an organized collection of data, they are developed in such a way that relevant aspects of reality are incorporated to support the processes necessary for data manipulation. Databases are involved in inputting, storing, managing and accessing information. Software programs are attached to databases to influence the levels of accessibility by users depending on the scope of an organization.

Oracle Database

Oracle Corporation developed the Oracle database which is considered to be object relation database management system. An oracle database is a collection of data which are treated as a unit. The purpose of Oracle database is to store and retrieve information when needed. A database plays an important part in providing sustainable solutions to existing complex problems in data management. Oracle database manages a large amount of data in a multiuser environment which makes the data available to different users operating in different locations concurrently.

Oracle database is the first database that was designed in form of enterprise grid computing. Enterprise grid computing enhances the level of efficiency and effectiveness that is experienced in data management by introducing flexibility and cost efficiency. Memory structure in the server side that is present in the Oracle database is referred to by the users as System Global Area (SGA). An Oracle database is developed in such a way that it contains at least one instance of application which is accompanied by the data storage. An instance of the application is attached to an instantiation number. It has a set of operating system processes and memory storage structures which necessitate the storage of data in the system.

The System Global Area that is present in the Oracle database plays the role of holding cache information which are in the form of data buffers, SQL commands and information inputted by the user. Online logs are present in Oracle database which are tasked with holding transactional history that has been carried out in the database in addition to data storage function. In order to enjoy advantages like scalability, redundancy and enhanced performance, it is important that Oracle database users implement Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC). Microsoft SQL Server

Microsoft Corporation developed Microsoft SQL Server which is a relational database management system. A relational database management system is a data system that is liked to relational models which relies on first order predicate logic. Microsoft SQL Server plays the role of storing data which can then be accessed by use of other applications available in the environment. Access of data contained in the Microsoft SQL Server database by users through the internet makes the database to be an online database.

Microsoft SQL Server exists in different forms which are developed to suit the needs of different applications and also handle different workload capacities. The primary query languages applied in the online database are T-SQL and ANSI SQL which also makes the database to be viable to be initiated in the cloud computing platform (Atkinson & Vieira, 2012).

The main purpose of Microsoft SQL Server as an online database is to facilitate effective storage and retrieval of data. Microsoft SQL Server supports different types of data which includes primary data, binary data and varchar. It allows for user defined composite types (UDTs) which are defined and used in the database. Statistic data which are stored in the database are made available in the form of virtual tables and views which are referred to as Dynamic Management Views (DMVs). The storage space that is provided in the database is divided into pages which are 8KB in size and are numbered in a chronological order. This makes the database to provide the users with a wide storage space where they can store their data and access in through multiple points at the same time with availability of internet connection.

Sybase

Sybase Company has developed a variety of Sybase databases which are developed to suit the needs of consumers in the versatile market. Sybase databases provide comprehensive data management technologies which provide a critical foundation for data storage and retrieval in organization in the contemporary society. Sybase databases are a form of online databases which provides accessibility of the stored data by different users assessing the database at the same time. Changing times has led to adoption of the cloud computing technology in Sybase databases which has ensured increased efficiency and effectiveness in terms of storage space and enhanced accessibility.

Sybase databases comes in any form and the latest example is called the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) which is also known as the Galaxy has evolved from being considered a data management system to being an information management system which is attributed to its different qualities. It means that the database has more operational scalability and flexibility which have improved accessibility across the internet network. It is no longer just confined to data storage but has introduced the aspect of large amounts of data storage and transfer of the same data in large amounts. Sybase database is able to handle huge volumes of information but it goes past the challenge of speed by introducing high velocity at the same time. There is a reduction in total cost of ownership as a result of the high volumes of data which are moving at high velocity which means the database does not need to have performance maintenance associated with high data volume.
