Phlebotomy Training Requirements in California

There are various levels of phlebotomy training that you may be seeking if you are going to become a licensed phlebotomist in California. Phlebotomy Training in California consists of three different licensing levels. The first licensing level is known as a Limited Certified Phlebotomy Technician. The Limited Certified Phlebotomy Technician, also known as Limited CPT, only allows you to perform skin punctures. This certification only requires that you complete 20 hours of basic classroom training. For the Limited Certified Phlebotomy Technician, you will also need to perform 25 successful skin punctures in a clinical setting. The Limited CPT does not require an examination to be completed for the certification. It does not require that you have previous experience either.

If you are going to be in need of a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I license in California, you will need to complete additional requirements and phlebotomy training. A Certified Phlebotomy Technician I can be obtained in various ways depending on your level of experience. For those that have more than 1040 hours of experience, you must only complete a 20 hour advanced phlebotomy training course. Those with more than 1040 hours will need to show proof of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures. Those with more than 1040 will still need to complete an examination. If you have less than 1040 hours then you will need to complete a 20 hour advanced course and a 20 hour basic course. Those with less than 1040 hours of prior experience will still need to complete an examination and prove that 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures have been completed. Those aspiring phlebotomists that are seeking a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I license with no prior experience will need to complete a 20 hour basic phlebotomy training course and a 20 hours advanced course. Those with no prior experience will need to complete their 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures in a clinical setting. An examination must also be completed.

The first phlebotomy training program in Sacramento is the Elk Grove Union High School District Regional Occupational Program. This is a phlebotomy training program that is for high school students and can be completed in approximately one semester. There is also a requirement that the student be 18 years old by the completion date of the program. You will still need to complete the 50 venipunctures and 10 successful skin punctures that will be done through a 40 hour externship offered as part of the program. At the end of the program you will need to complete an approved examination to earn you Certified Phlebotomy Technician I certification.

The next phlebotomy training program in Sacramento is at Folsom Lake College. This is a medical laboratory technician program that is a thorough program that meets all of the requirements for phlebotomy training as set out by the State of California. This program allows you to become a licensed phlebotomist and more as you will learn more about laboratory operations, testing and diagnostics. This program is a two year program that requires you to complete several prerequisites prior to applying to the program.

There is also a medical assistant program that is offered through the MTI College. This program will allow you to become a licensed phlebotomist in California and allows you to become a medical assistant, which can mean increased employment opportunities. There may also be a chance to complete this program for phlebotomy training if you meet certain requirements set by the school.

The last program is offered through the Kaiser Permanente School of Allied Health that is located in Stockton. This a sizable car ride, but is another option for those who do not see the other programs in the immediate area as fit for their needs. It also has new classes starting this fall and winter. These spots go quickly so it is important to register as soon as possible. Some of the requirements can takes some time to complete so it is good to think ahead. This phlebotomy training program is offered at less than $3,000 and is a total of 320 hours in length. This phlebotomy training program will allow you to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I.There is an externship portion included and will meet all the requirements for venipunctures and skin punctures need to become licensed in California.
