Post Office Hours of Operation

Updated on January 26, 2011

Post Office Hours

Trying to figure out when your local post office closes can be a daunting task. The United States Post Office maintains hours of operation that vary by location and date. Some city Post Offices stay open much later than others.

The information below will provide you with standard postal office times and additional informational regarding USPS's holiday hours and other times of limited operation

Standard Post Office Hours

.The standard post office closing time is set at 5:00 PM. With that being said there are post offices that stay open as late as 7:00 PM. If you are unsure as to when your particular post office closes, you should aim to arrive not later than 5 or 10 minutes before 5:00 PM.

There is the instance of certain post office locations being open 24 hours a day. For example the post office in my city is open 24 hours per day, however no employees are present. At these particular branches patrons may use the automated kiosk to print shipping and mail. As technology increases, expect to see more post offices opting to install automated shipping kiosks.

Post Office Last Pick up Hours

Sometimes there is confusion between a post office's closing time and last pick up time. A post office's last pick up time is the same as their closing. So a USPS office that closes at 5:00 PM will have a last pick up time of 5:00 PM.

Post Office Tax Day Hours

As a courtesy to prefer to wait until the last minute to send in their tax forms, the post office is open later on April 15th. How much longer the post office near you depends on your location but expect most post offices to stay open at least 1 hour past the offices original closing time.

Special Post Office Holiday Hours

The post office will be closed on the day of the following federal holidays:

  • Christmas
  • Presidents Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • New Year’s Day

It is extremely rare to find a post office that operates on any of these federal holidays so be sure to conduct all important post office business a day or two before these dates.

Finding A Post Office Location

There are two ways to go about finding a post office location. You may either use the Post Office's online locator or call the main office.

- To find a local location by phone call 1-800-ASK-USPS

- To use the post office's online locator, simply log on to USPS's main website

Keep In Mind

Keep in mind that just because a post office is scheduled to close at a certain time does not mean that the main lobby will also be closed. If the lobby of your local post office stays open past closing, you can still conduct business such as buying stamps, checking PO boxes, picking up forms, etc.

In Closing

There is nothing worst then heading to the post office only to find out that they are closed. If you are ever unsure of when you local post offices closes give 1-800-ASK-USPS a call.
