Search Engine Optimization and Keywords Research

Updated on February 23, 2014

Search Engine Optimization is one of the key factors dominating the internet. It is a very structured field and can be very easy if some very basic guidelines are followed. It helps you have a better page rank for the search engines. In this hub, I will list a set of guidelines which I have come across while looking for efficient techniques to optimize my website for search engines.

Common SEO Guidelines and Thumb Rules

These are a few SEO guidelines which can be referred to as thumb rules to avoid getting a bad page rank. These are not a guarantee to having a good page rank, but will definitely help you avoid a bad page rank on search engines.

Targeting the right keywords
One should always choose keywords which one wants to compete for. For exmple, if you are making a website about the Portugal soccer team, you would want to compete with other websites on the content of your site, which includes information about other soccer players and the current state/history of the team. You really don't need to rank high on search engines for the word 'soccer'. Try focussing on the key stuff you offer on your site, which in this case, would be the 'Portugal team'.

Duplicate Meta Tags
Tags should be unique and meaningful for each page. If the same meta tags are used for multiple pages, search engines view them as probable duplicate content and result in your low ranking in the web search.
There's another analogy to this. If the same meta tags decorate every pages of yours, your pages will be fighting each other to be ranked in the search engines.

Don't include only Flash in your site, include HTML as well
Websites built using Flash look pretty cool, but the problem with these sites is that Search Engines can't go through the content. Ensure that HTML content is included, this will help you get a pagerank.
Another option could be having a site which has the options of choosing from a Flash or a HTML alternative.

Image description, not images will help you get a page rank
Text search engines scan your site for content, but they're unable to read the images. This means even the very beautiful images on your page might be invisible to the search engines. The only solution to this unfortunate event can be to provide meaningful names to the images. This is the only way a search engine can look for an image by the name.'imagename.jpg' would show up whenever someone searches for an image in the search engines.

Proper Content Hierarchy
Many people underestimate the power of a well structured website.Search engines rank websites higher if they have good amount of content which is well structured. Using heading tags is a good option to organize the content. This will improve the way search engines index your site.

Submit Your Site to Search Engines

Google, Yahoo, Bing are among the most popular search engines. For every search that is made, relevant data is returned in two categories: sponsored and free links. Your aim should be to rank high for the free links as it provides great exposure and is free.
To use this 'free feature', you need to enlist your site to search engines. This will result in faster search results and getting a better pagerank faster.
It is free and very easy to submit your website to search engines! You better do that submission manually as the search engines ask for verification when submitting the site.

Optimize Meta Tags

The meta tags are probably the most important part of your site from the search engine point of view. Though read by the search engine, they are not displayed on the site. As they include the summary of the webpage content, try inserting keywords into it. Most meta tags are included in the header part of the code. The header and description are shown in the search results while listing your site.

You should consider the length and the order of the characters/words included in each of the meta tags. Note that the search engine robots read from left to right and those words that come first are more important than those that come towards the end of the page.It could be said that the title is one of the most important factors for a successful search engine optimization of your website. Located within the <head> section, right above the Description and Keywords tag, it provides summarized information about your website. Make sure the most important keyword you have decided to fight for is used in your title tag and as early in the phrase as possible.

The description tag should be written in such way that it will show what information your website contains or what your website is about. Write short and clear sentences that will not confuse your visitors. The meta description tag also has a great importance for the SEO optimization of your page. It is most important for the prospect visitor when looking at the search engine result page - this tag is often displayed there and helps you to distinguish your site from the others in the list.

Meta tags of your site can be edited through the File Manager or the cPanel of the hosting account.

Relevant Search Keywords

The first step in Search Engine Optimization is to identify the process by which search engines find your page relevant to the content users search for. Whenever any user enters certain content in the search box, search engines start looking for various associated keywords. The best practice is to include relevant keywords in the title and meta tags.

Successful Keywords
Choosing the successful keywords is quite simple and logical. The best keywords are the ones that are used the most by the people. It's quite possible that less number of well thought keywords can be more successful than using a huge number of haphazard keywords.
For example, if you make a web page regarding Search Engine Optimization, you could include keywords like search engine optimization, SEO, keyword research, keyword tool, choose keyword etc.

If you have any website, using general keywords such as sport, internet, movies etc would invite far too much competition. Try using keywords which express exactly the jist of your content.

Adding your geographical location might narrow down the search volume, but might be easier to fight against larger sites.

Google Keyword Tool
You can always use Keywords Tool, which will help you target your keywords. It will help you identify the keywords which will increase the search volume in a particular targeted region. This will help you compare the reach potential of various targeted keywords.

Improve Your Website Content

Meta tags and content are the most important parts of any site, as these are the two criteria used by search engines to rank the pages.

Keyword Density
Take proper care about including proper number of keywords in the content. Be careful not to overcrowd your content with keywords, as keywords without legitimate content would gain negative points from the SEO tools.

Using different headers helps the Search Engines identify different importance associated with the same keywords. For example, using a particular keyword in the header will yield more weightage than that of the content.'H1' is the HTML version of the most important title on the web page.

Keep Updating
Search Engines associate the importance of any site with the quality of content and the rate at which the content is updated. So, keep adding new content to your page. Your laziness will reduce the taffic search engines are directing to your site.

Link Building and Back Linking

Quality links are the ultimate criterion for the quality of your website. It is an efficient way of increasing traffic to your website.Link exchange is also considered essential for the search-ability of your website - search engines like sites with a great number of incoming links as these sites are perceived as more important than poorly linked sites. In the ideal world, it would be great if you could only have incoming links to your site and no outgoing, however, in reality you can rarely have your link listed on a relevant site unless you link in return. That is why link exchange is so important.

The greater the number of incoming links to your site, the more popular it becomes for search engines. The higher the Google rank of the pages linking to yours, the bigger the boost to your site rankings is.A specific page's importance is also measured by the importance and depth of the other pages on the site that refer to the page in question. You should be careful with link exchange because it presumes you have to give in order to get. It is not a problem to give exposure to another website from your own, just make sure you don’t crowd your own pageswith external links as you will be losing link juice.
