Senior Citizen Employees - Please Sit This One Out!
Workplaces are flooded with senior employees.
Not that I have anything against the elderly. I happen to love them! I think that they are blessed or lucky (which ever term you believe in) to have lived so long in this dangerous and evil world. However, in having a conversation a couple of weeks ago with an elderly coworker of mine I realized that there just may be too many older employees in the workforce. Keep in mind that I'm only thirty-one, and when I say "elderly" I am referring to those who are old enough and eligible for retirement. In other words, if you have been working longer than I've been on this Earth then you are elderly.
Younger, qualified applicants need these jobs.
I sat at the front desk accepting applications from middle-aged men and women who have children to feed and put through college. There were no open positions for these applicants simply because my elderly coworkers refused to retire.
One of my elderly coworkers told me that he wasn't ready to retire. He expressed to me the fact that he owned a rental property as well as his own home and had a nice retirement plan in place. So why is he still working? His reasons were that he would be bored at home and wouldn't be able to live as comfortably as he would like to. He didn't seem to care that younger applicants couldn't get his job even though they have children still in the home. All of his offspring are already grown adults likely unable to get a job for the same reason---because of some other elderly worker taking up a good workforce position.
While I realize that not all elderly employees can afford to retire it's time to make room for the youth. There are just too many families going without because mom and dad can't find a job. If you are eligible for retirement stop clogging up the workforce. Retire. Life is too short to live out all of your days working. Enjoy the time that you left, and allow for the younger generation to be able support thier families just as your did all those many years ago.
