Setting Up a Tax ID Number in Ohio

For business owners in Ohio it is important to file for a tax ID number through the Federal Internal Revenue Service. The needed Ohio tax ID number is a FEIN (Federal Employment Identification Number). It is used in place of a social security number when it comes to tax and income reporting. The tax ID number is a unique number that is assigned to your business that allows you to legally operate in the State of Ohio.

There are several ways to get a tax ID number. The easiest way to now apply is by using the online application that is set up through the IRS website.

There are several ways to get a tax ID number.  The easiest way to now apply is by using the online application that is set up through the IRS website.

This is a secure website with help sections online that help answer questions about what is needed for each section of the application.  If you plan to use the online application, plan to fill each section out completely since the data that is entered cannot be saved for later completion.  Also, if there is no activity for 15 minutes your session will time out and you will have to start over again so make sure you have about an hour of uninterrupted time with a good internet connection.  The online application is only available during the following times:

Monday - Friday: 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Eastern time
Saturday: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern time
Sunday: 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Eastern time

If you do not feel comfortable entering sensitive information online there are other options.  For all business owners who reside in one of the 50 United States a simple form can be used to file for a Tax ID number. Form SS-4 can be completed with the required information, signed and mailed to:

Internal Revenue Service Center
Attn: EIN Operation
Cincinnati, OH 45999

You can find IRS Form SS-4 at:

This form can also be faxed to:

Fax-TIN:  (859) 669-5760

The other option to obtain a Tax ID (EIN) number is to call (800) 829-4933 between the hours of 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM (local time).  This line is set up to quickly process a tax ID request.

Once a Tax ID number is obtained it can be filed or updated with the Ohio Secretary of State office.  This can be done by updated existing corporation, partnership, or LLC forms or by paying the $125 fee to establish one of these types of businesses in Ohio.
